Show Me That Gooseneck: A Basketball Lyric

Author:

I’ve enjoyed writing for many years. I'm dedicating more time to the craft in my retirement days.

Show Me That Gooseneck

Show me that gooseneck

The coach said to me

As I set my feet

Jumped and took the three

Fluid in elbow

Supple in the wrist

I aimed for that hoop

And just never missed

Show me that gooseneck
Show me that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Show me that gooseneck

Way too young

To start driving yet

Shoot beyond the arc

Whoosh! Nothing but net!

The game’s on the line

And we’re down by two

Running out of time

And I know what to do

Show ‘em that gooseneck
Show ‘em that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Show ‘em that gooseneck

You bring the ball in

We’ll set up the play

Then dash down the court

And I’ll shoot the trey

I’ll fake the defender

Tell him yeah, you wish

Then take the big fader

And hear it go swish

Show ‘em that gooseneck
Show ‘em that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Show ‘em that gooseneck

Run back defend now

Keep your man in check

Don’t let him shoot three

That dreaded gooseneck

Watch out for the screen

At top of the key

The guard on the point

Will try to break free

And show us that gooseneck
Show us that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Show us that gooseneck

Defend ‘em outside

Keep assignments straight

Don’t give ‘em good looks

They can’t close the gate

Oh wait, who’s that guy

Inside on the loose?

He’s so wide open

He’ll lay up the deuce!

And don’t need no gooseneck
Don’t need no gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Don’t need no gooseneck

A heartbreaking loss

A crushing defeat

Losers hanging heads

Slowly dragging feet

But not on our team

We had heads held high

We didn’t lose, no

And I’ll tell you why

Didn’t show that gooseneck
Didn’t show that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Didn’t show that gooseneck

On the inbound play

After they made two

Tossed in to Leroy

Who knew what to do

A long arcing throw

Like he played left field

Bounced right off the glass

And three points did yield

No need for that gooseneck
No need for that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
No need for that gooseneck

I still hit the courts

Three days out of four

And I’ll bet you think

I don’t trey no more

But if that is true

I must say you’re wrong

It’s not just the shot

I so love that song:

Show me that gooseneck
Show me that gooseneck
Dribble dribble feint feint
Dribble dribble feint feint
Show me that gooseneck

Coach Says: "Show Me the Gooseneck!"

Yes, indeed. I've struggled with that myself, as many of us have. I hate the fact that my own articles are the easiest for me to comment on (due to the author view feature) and wish that the powers that be would follow through on the statement made in late 2020 about comments returning this year in summer-ish timeframe. I'm convinced now that Samantha was telling us in good faith what they told her, but believe they never intended to follow through on that.

Yep, that's why you don't see me so much anymore. Finding what I want to comment on in my feed takes far too much time than I often have.

Sha Sha - first things first: it’s really good to hear from you! This comment system, the wonky feed thing, the whole business has really changed the dynamic out here in HubLand / Mavenville. And not for the better.

And yes, there is nothing more satisfying than the swish of a perfectly shot ball as it spits itself out the bottom of the next. Swish! Nothing but net all night long! Haha! Thanks for giving this a go. It came into being—the start of it, anyway—while watching the Bucks beat the Suns the other night. Game six is on tonight!

Love this, Box! It's been a long time since I've played basketball, but love the game (to play, not to watch). Love the sound of a swisher, don't you?
