Word Prompts Help Creativity

Word prompts are a great way to kick start our creativity and I personally can’t resist the challenge that they present. They often make us tackle writing that may be outside our comfort zone and the genre we usually stick to.

Brenda Arledge has been kindly providing the HubPages community with such word prompts for the last 41 weeks. This week’s prompt was in fact the word “shopping” (which is far outside my comfort zone.) These poems are my response to that challenge. Thank you Brenda.

When women are depressed, they eat or go shopping. Men invade another country. It’s a whole different way of thinking.

Shopping Day Blues

Shopping day is here again,
it’s really not my scene.

I’d rather sit outside the store,

most men know what I mean.

I really don’t like shopping,

my wife is not like me -

she looks at every clothing rack

like it’s a Christmas tree.

Sometimes I tag along behind
like a faithful little dog,

”Yes dear, that is very nice,

why don’t you try it on?”

When going grocery shopping

my wife says, “I’ll let you go!
You only get what’s on the list,

that way we save, you know.”

Online shopping’s not so bad,

though with money you still part.

Just click the thing you want to buy,

Voila! It’s in your cart.

Then wait a few days, week, or month -

sometimes it may be lost.

You may forget you ordered it,

that can be a hidden cost.

But, it isn’t only women

who have the shopping bug.

I know of men addicted too,

it can be like a drug.

They call it “retail therapy”

to pick you up when you feel down.

As long as you stay in control

or in credit debt you’ll drown.

There’re credit cards, ZIP, Afterpay,

store cards of many names.

Have anything you want right now

and pay another day.

So, shopping makes me nervous,

I break out in a sweat.

I’ll just go to the races

and place a few small bets.

My least favorite aspect of shopping is shopping.

Price Wars ~ an Acrostic Poem

Some people simply love to shop

Heaven for them on Earth

Others see it more as hell

Perhaps it’s in between

Price wars attract shoppers

Impatient push and shove

No one care for others needs

Getting first what is on sale

Come shopping with me

We won’t even spend a cent

While window shopping

I went window shopping today! I bought four windows.
