Send Me Butterflies

Retired counselor, 341 short stories published by FSU. I have 4 sons, love sharing photography, writing, love travel, sunshine, sea & Grace.

(Written because someone very close to me...has a terminal illness)

Let me drink in your smiles whilst we're together
Let me hold your eyes and remember them forever
Let me be close to you until we blend
Let there be laughter and joy until the end

Let me stay by your side as you die
Let my love be enough when you cry
Let me smile as my heart aches and grieves
Let me share God with you, before you leave

Let me be strong when the time comes
Let me be strong!
Let me be able to let go when you pass on
Let me be gracious as my heart breaks in two
Let me want to breathe, as each breath leaves you

Let me lay you to rest with Gods Grace
Let me always remember your face
Let me not hate God for taking you away
Let me not bargain and beg you to stay
Let me try to carry on each day.

Let me not grieve and become bitter when you leave
Let me be able to go forward and believe
Let me know we'll meet again, somewhere in time
Let me know my dearest one, that you are fine
Let me know, send me butterflies... as a sign.

Hi Christopher, your comment is a poem in itself. Thank you for your appraisal which is exactly right about how I feel - and thank you for the butterflies, Helen

Christopher Price from Vermont, USA on November 10, 2010:

Touching and honest. It is refreshing to experience through you the conflicting emotions...sad for your friend but trying to be up beat; dreading your inevitable loss but unwilling to wallow in self pity; fearing the future without your loved one but praying for a reunion in the afterlife...

This was a wonderful expression of the "survivor's song".

I wish you butterflies when you need them most.

Hi green tea-cher ~ I've heard that many times... butterflies or feathers. I am going to read your hubs on grief and "The dreaded Words" right now - thank you for your kind words and support!

green tea-cher on November 10, 2010:

Beautiful expression of your grief, brightforyou. I find it interesting that you chose a butterfly for a sign. I recently had a client of mine tell me that whenever she is missing her loved one( that passed away) a butterfly will appear as though to reassure her that he is fine. I'm linking your poem to mine "The Dreaded Words"

Thanks so much for sharing.
