Poem: Secret Walls
"Wall 'Round Your Heart" by Mary Chapin Carpenter w/ Vince Gill and Kathy Mattea
One enters this world
an innocent child
with no troubles,
he grows up with laughter, sadness, comfort and joy,
learning heartache a little more each day.
He journeys from one road
to the next
with no real assurance
if his path will lead to a dead end
filled with heartache,
or the right crossing filled with love.
He learns to build walls
to keep his heart safe from harm,
as he travels this trail of life
with each passing day feeling more complicated,
leading him on detours.
He finds comfort in
protecting himself in these secret walls
from the outer limits of the world,
staying in those sturdy layers
not taking a chance
of becoming lost.
