Sankhajit Bhattacharjee Poem 245

Scientific Research Fellow in University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee

An Old Woman

At the age of eighty

she suffered from a brain stroke,

her heart too was not functioning well

but death was not appearing to choke.

Her relations became frustrated with her,

they asked her, 'When will you die'?

She understood nothing at all,

she never questioned, 'Why?'

One day she took a rope,

tied it tightly round her neck,

then tried to open the knot,

but failed to understand her mistake.

Within minutes she breathed her last,

her tongue came out with drops of blood.

Her relations discovered this later,

their frustration was turned into tear without a single word.

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on July 07, 2021:

I've never understood why people treat the elderly in such a disrespectful manner, and why they seem to forget that they, too, will become old one day, and history will repeat itself. Thank you for sharing this thought-provoking piece with us.

Blessings to you!
