Sacrificed for the Queen

The queen’s bishop laid down
like a steel rim pawn along
the path to nowhere while
the bare tire said, “I would
only die without you if I
believed I needed you”

I don’t know what remains
that a woman would want
from a man in a forest
without a tree, a discarded
piece lying alone scarred
without remorse by love

Whoever played this game
knew how to win, like a
junkie looking for a needle,
was it so necessary that you
separated life from what
you once prayed it to be?
