Response to "Word Prompts Help Creativity ~week 33 (Photograph) - "Photograph"; "Sunday Dinners"; & "Mobile Pictures"

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Response to "Word Prompts Help Creativity ~Week 33 (photograph) - "Photograph"; "Sunday Dinners"; & "Mobile Pictures" is my last minute write on photograph.

I had something else in mind and I might still do that one in the future, but I was running behind schedule, so I jotted down these lines..

Photograph ~ Acrostic Poem

Points in time

Holding cherished memories

Only meant for our eyes

Treasuring moments

Of the past

Grabbing our hearts attention

Reliving those days

At a time when we need to smile

Placing magic in our eyes

Hugging us from beyond.

Sunday Dinners

She remembers a smoke-filled kitchen

when the adults played penny ante,

after the dishes were washed and dried

on Sunday afternoons at Grandma’s.

The adults eating at the table

while the children took their plates

to a tablecloth on the floor,

inside Granny’s tiny home.

Moments when we all came together

making memories,

taking snapshots,

enjoying life as we knew it.

The days are gone

when tradition was followed,

but the pictures remain

and float back to our hearts

on those sad times when one departs.

Mobile Pictures

Those cameras on our mobile phones,

a handy tool indeed,

lets us flip through a fountain of memories

with just a touch.

A photograph speaking a thousand words

touching our hearts,

making a tear or two drop with just a glance.

On those nights apart from family

a photo brings a bit of warmth and happiness

tugging on a heart that longs for familiarity

sharing a snapshot

as quick as a flash.

Photography takes an instant out of time,

altering life by holding it still.

Thank you.

It seems we all used to do Sunday Dinners and then sadly times change.

I'm glad my words sparked a memory for you.

Beautiful poetry! The Sunday Dinner poem made me remember those good old days when we would all gather together on Sundays at Grandma's house. We never missed a Sunday. Then, as life would have it, people moved away and Sunday dinners became a thing of our memories. I like Dorothy Lange's quote. It is so true about photographs.

Greg

Thank you.

I'm glad my words could take you back to a moment in time.

I think a lot of us can remember those family get togethers which we don't do any longer.

Have a wonderful week.

Brenda - I love so much the "Photograph" prompt and what it has done to spark such wild creativity. I especially love, love, love the Sunday Dinners poem. It literally made me cry thinking of my own grandparents, my own parents, our family gatherings at relatives' house where we didn't sit at a table cloth on the floor, but instead a smaller table with smaller chairs. Conversation among the kids, I remember, was often about "graduating" to the big table one day. I even remember the first time I was old enough to sit at the big table...I had to go during the "second shift" because there wasn't enough room for me during "first shift," and I was too old to sit at the kids' table. I'm getting teary-eyed again just writing this now. Anyway, not only a great prompt but a fantastic response from you on that prompt. Thanks for helping to keep the community alive, Brenda.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on October 12, 2021:

Hi Brenda,

You evoked so many memories in your poetry of people, places, and traditions. Pictures do freeze a moment in time, and looking at them can bring back so many memories. I enjoyed reading your poems.

Ms. Dora

Thank you so much.

It is amazing how others respond to these word prompts & the work is excellent.

I don't think you ever have a problem with courage...that's just not part of you.

Misbah

Thank you.

It was a moment in my childhood.

We don't have them anymore.

Take care

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on October 12, 2021:

Chitrangada

Thank you.

I'm glad you like them.

I think it was our generation that did those Sunday dinners.

The stores gere used to ve closed on Sundays...what we called Blue Sundays.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on October 12, 2021:

Pamela

Thank you.

We used to have Sunday Dinners when I was little, but as time went on...that season passed.

Some times it was great, other times it was awful.

I'll remember the good moments, as well as the not so good ones..

But I'm glad life doesn't have to follow a routine like that now.

For us it was every Sunday..

Now families are busy with their lives to stick to this kind of commitment.

Hopefully they still find time to get together...

At least a little bit each month.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on October 12, 2021:

John

Thanks.

It's not really what I had in mind back in the beginning, but my mind got detoured.

Glad you liked them.

Love the quote from the fabulous photographer of reality and real people, Dorthea Lange. Sent me searching for the book I was given back in the 80s to review her amazing photos. Great inspiration on this week 33 prompt. And your poetry is lovely.

Dora Weithers on October 12, 2021:

Beautiful sentiments in beautiful poetry. What a great job you're doing with these prompts. You're extracting some deep, meaningful thoughts and ideas from those who write. One day, I'll have enough courage to try.

Hello Brenda!

A beautiful response to the word prompt, photographs. Sunday Dinners reminds me of my younger days. I liked your acrostic poem, expressing the significance of photographs.

Thank you for sharing. Have a blessed day.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on October 12, 2021:

I like all your poems with different messages. I especially like 'Sunday Dinners' as in so many families those traditions are gone, which seems sad.

John Hansen from Gondwana Land on October 11, 2021:

I love your poetry on the "photograph" theme, Brenda. You offered a diverse take on the theme, with these poems. Nice job.

Liz Westwood from UK on October 11, 2021:

This is a well-written collection of poetry that covers a wide range of scenes. You have taken the theme and expanded on it in a vivid, inciteful and meaningful way.
