Poem: Sit Back, Relax, and Watch

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

"When People Don't Appreciate What You Do For Them - Eye Opener " posted by Jeremy Bennett

Sit Back, Relax and Watch

When your efforts
are not appreciated,
sit back, relax and watch
as the world burns,
not lifting a finger to put out the fire.

When others act insensitive,
shouting words of disappointment, tune a deaf ear for you don't deserve their criticism.

Stop reaching out with guidance
when one is ungrateful,
stand back and watch him
start a sea of flames
he cannot control.

"Stop Giving People Advice When They Don't Ask For It" by Phil Cooke

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on April 18, 2021:

Don't sit there and wait for that phone to ring.

You know the saying, the watch pot never boils.

You will just get frustrated. Some people just have busy lives and can't seem to squeeze the extra moments in or have some strange reason.

Whatever the case...I'm sure it has nothing to do with you.

The ones I'm talking about are just waiting for a hand out, like it is owed to them or something.

Take care and have a great day.

Ann Carr from SW England on April 18, 2021:

You're right that many people seem to think it's fine to just sit back and wait for the world to help them or acknowledge them - how unfair that is! One has to earn a privilege or respect, it's a reciprocal thing. I know a few who ring me and say, 'Oh, I haven't heard from you for ages!' - yet they never think of phoning me! Sometimes I just wait to see how long it takes! And then I feel bad.

Stay safe and well, Brenda!

Thank you.

It's often hard to do when you hate to see the ones you love hurting.

But sometimes necessary.

Have a good evening.

Ravi Rajan from Mumbai on April 17, 2021:

Yes Brenda if our efforts are not appreciated there is no point of shouting or getting disappointed as those actions are going to hurt us more. Sit back, relax ,watch and I would add ignore those people are the best ways to prevent getting burnt down by such selfish mortals. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much!

It's a bit of a sensitive subject, but it's so true.

Have a great day or night.

Tulii Banerjee from Kolkata on April 17, 2021:

You are very right Brenda, I also relate to this. Very very true! An excellent poem! Thank you so much for sharing this...

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on April 17, 2021:

Thank you.

That's true. A relationship must ne mutually beneficial.

It's difficult to watch family members make mistakes that cause you to close the door.

Take care.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 17, 2021:

Sometimes it is best to exit a relationship that is not mutually beneficial and appreciated.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on April 16, 2021:

Thank you for your kindness.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my work.

You are right. It is very rare if someone praises you for your good deeds.

It is often mislabeled as selfishness.

There are times one needs to just sit back and watch.

Do Nothing.

Take care & have a pleasant weekend.

EK Jadoon from Abbottabad Pakistan on April 16, 2021:

What a beautiful and thought-provoking poem, Brenda. I rarely comment on poetry. But your poetry has won my heart. You have selected a great topic. Let me tell you one thing that I have experienced in my 26 years of life; people will never praise you for your good intentions to them. Even with time, they will call it a 'Drama' or 'selfishness'. The batter way to cope with them is don't bother yourself with such kinda selfish people.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on April 16, 2021:

Thank you.

I have seen this happen to good people all the time.

It's so frustrating.

I hate to see myself or my family give up so much time for ungrateful people.

Take care.

VIDYA D SAGAR on April 16, 2021:

There is so much truth in your poem Brenda. No point in doing good to people who do not appreciate it. Giving advice to someone who does not want it is a waste of time and energy. Better to air back and watch. Have a good day.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on April 16, 2021:

Stop helping ungrateful people

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on January 24, 2020:

Thank you.

Sometimes it ends up hurting you if you keep trying to help.

Trying to keep positive thoughts around you is much better.

Thanks for reading.

Ann Carr from SW England on January 24, 2020:

We can offer the help but it's up to others to accept or not. There's no point in pushing our will and sometimes it does us harm not to walk away from the negative.

Well expressed.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on January 07, 2020:

Thanks for reading.

Yes, maturity is important.

Have a great day.

Chitrangada Sharan from New Delhi, India on January 07, 2020:

Excellent poem and so relatable.

As we grow up and mature with age, we don’t bother for such things. What matters is our own sincerity and satisfaction in everything, we do.

Thanks for sharing this.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on January 06, 2020:

Thank you.

It is difficult to do, but you are right.

Enough is enough.

Thanks for reading.

Hope you have a wonderful day.

Harish Mamgain from New Delhi , India on January 06, 2020:

You have spoken the truth. When we 're constantly ignored and humiliated, a resolute inner voice says to us : enough is enough. A beautiful rendering dear friend.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on January 05, 2020:

You are right. It is hard to just sit by and watch, but sometimes one has too.

But in the case of mother and child if the chikd is young then you have to help.

Thanks for reading.

Have a great day.

manatita44 from london on January 05, 2020:

A reflective piece and a seemingly easy approach which is quite difficult for us lesser mortals. A lot of truth here and as my teacher would say: 'Never worry about things you cannot change.

Of course he will also say that the good doctor gives the medicine, even while knowing that it is bitter because it will cure the patient. Like the mom and child, perhaps, leading the child out of the danger of complacency and into the light of wisdom. Peace.
