Poem: She Puts on a Mask

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

"Away From The Sun" by 3 Doors Down

poem-she-puts-on-a-mask

It’s so hard for her to sit here
listening to the silence
echoing from the walls,
yearning to hear the familiar voice
from not so long ago.

Remembering those moments
like they were yesterday,
wishing she could drift back in time
a teardrop silently falls,
convincing her to grab the keys.

A drive to the country side
in this cold brisk winter air,
taking her to a place
where no one knows her name,
she puts on a mask hiding her pain
pretending all is fine.

Hi Brenda, I like what you wrote to me below. It's like reinventing oneself isn't it? I have a chance to do that now. I just left a toxic relationship and moved to England from Hawaii. I am meeting new people who have never met me before. The relationship I am in now makes me want to be a better person. Previously, I wanted to literally die and had given up hope. God bless

Ruth,

It is tiresome to wear the mask around those you already know. That's more like pretending all is fine to please them.

But wearing the mask around new people who don't know you...kinda gives you a new perspective on life.

Showing you a new way of life letting you be more of your true self.

Thanks for reading.

Kathryn Collins from UK on March 05, 2020:

I think many people do this. I am learning to be more genuine even if people misunderstand. Wearing the mask can be exhausting. :-)
