I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Article Summary

Poem: Response to "Word Prompts Help Creativity~Week 22 (shadow): "Shadow Friend"; "His Shadow"; "Only the Shadow Knows" is my response to this word prompt.

I have included 3 poems that talk about friendship, God's shadow, & missing the shadow of a loved one.

I actually wrote 4 poems, but I am only including 3 of them here. The other one I like so well that I am going to submit it for publication.

My muse took awhile to be inspired for this one, but it finally got on board.

I hope you like them.

Shadow Friend

No matter where my footsteps lead,

my shadow follows me

like a long-lost puppy

searching for his owner.

I try to comfort her,

but she disappears

before my hand can touch her silhouette,

leaving me baffled

and alone.

I wish she’d stick around

and be my secret friend

but she vanishes each day when I get home,

For there is no light shining in.

Shadow owes its birth to light.

— John Gay

His Shadow

Somehow, I know

He walks with me

Avenging those who do me wrong

Determined to make them walk

On a straight and narrow path

Wishing they were worthy of my love.

Light is the shadow of God.

— Plato

Only The Shadow Knows

Sitting alone in the emptiness

remembering a life once-shared,

not wanting to harbor the darkness

left behind.

Emotionally stuck in the past

replaying their passionate dreams,

hoping to bring a glint of magic back.

She touches tears of joy and sadness

left behind from their secret world,

where only two shadows know their deep affection,

but now there is only one.

Missing your shadow

Beside of mine...

— Sawjanya Yandav

Lora Hollings on July 26, 2021:

Brenda, your poem "Shadow Friend" is playful and charming. Then your poem about God takes on a much more serious note with a subtle message of not hurting others and to live by moral principles. And your last poem, "Only the Shadow Knows" is my absolute favorite. I love the emotional depth in your poem and you manage to convey the profound sadness, the isolation, of this person who lost her great love. Your allusion to these lovers being shadows from the past, (one because she lost her lover) and he because he no longer is real but exists only in the form of a shadow makes this poem especially powerful and haunting. Splendid job with these poems!

Pamela

Thank you.

That Cole Swindell video did seem fitting.

I guess I was trying to portray that when someone loses a love through death...there us only one shadow left.

As for the acrostic poem...it was a bit tough to come up with one.

Thank you for saying I met this challenge...I wasn't sure.

Have a great day.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on July 24, 2021:

Each of these poems is excellent, Brenda, and carries different meanings. From childlike curiosity to belief in the Almighty to missing a loved one now gone, you have outdone yourself with your word challenge.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on July 24, 2021:

Pamela, yes, I agree wholely. The last two lines are very challenging. That's why a while ago, I wrote that sayying good bye to a losted loved is not enough. There's something vitally missing in that bye you said. That loved one is like a shadow. Your comment is moving indeed.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on July 24, 2021:

I like all of your poems and that Cole Swindell song really fits that last poem, Brenda.

I think your acrostic poem is excellent as it has such a clear message.

The last lines of the first poem:

"where only two shadows know their deep affection,

but now there is only one." really makes her sound so lonely. It's like she really needs a close friend.

I think you have definitely met your own challenge, Brenda.

Miebakagh Fiberesima from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, NIGERIA. on July 24, 2021:

Brenda, very creative piece of poems. I like all. The quote by Plato is fabulous. How come he knows God that far? Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful poems Brenda. We all try to find our shadows but we end losing them. But the shadows know everything we do and think and know our innermost secrets. Great writing Brenda.
