Poem: Partial Painting

Inspired by Infinity War

Partial Painting

Colours blend harmoniously,

Palette a brush’s motion,

Original cases retain identity,

Drip dry interest forgotten.

Spillovers fail to converge,

Swallowed by baseless sheet,

Never to be merged,

Just outline no quit.

Lingering traces,

Passionate caresses,

On this plainness,

Not mingling.

Painting is partial,

Mixture is offensive,

Trying pigments,

That stay passive.

Poem Meaning

Colours blend harmoniously,

Palette a brush’s motion,

Original cases retain identity,

Drip dry interest forgotten.

Colours blend harmoniously means that there are people who form a strong connection with us. Palette represents those certain people who motivate us to be ourselves just like how an artist is motivated to paint (brush's motion). You share that part of yourself that you don't share with some. Those people whom we share a strong connection with may be far away or unavailable. You feel that only them can make you the happiest person in the room. Know that the happiest moments don't last forever and some of the best things are not for free.

Spillovers fail to converge,

Swallowed by baseless sheet,

Never to be merged,

Just outline no quit.

Both parties do not make the effort to meet up (converge). Affectionate feelings are not confessed between them which emphasizes a groundless relationship. There only lies memories (outline no quit).

Lingering traces,

Passionate caresses,

On this plainness,

Not mingling.

You still want to linger longer around them and are attached. However, nothing materialises. No relationship is pursued.

Painting is partial,

Mixture is offensive,

Trying pigments,

That stay passive.

The painting is partial because when nobody initiates a move or either one is waiting, the painting is incomplete. Mixture is offensive is because people are reluctant to hurt their pride if one has to initiate.

Sorry for the late reply, Bill. Thanks for stopping by. Definitely. You are a beautiful picture of life! No need to hope but may your wishes come true.

Bill Holland from Olympia, WA on November 05, 2018:

It is helpful and interesting to read your thoughts behind your words. I hope I am painting a beautiful picture of life. That is my intention!

Thanks Hari! :) Lol...I am so late.

Hari Prasad S from Bangalore on July 22, 2018:

Excellent poetry Li. I liked the explanation too, it helped to understand the metaphor.

We do tend to sort friendships like a pallets of colors, each one is remembered for a reason.

Hi Rinita. I see...paintings as a metaphor. :) Oh wow, flawless? That's too much. Unless you mean nice in the imperfect sense. Thanks! :)

Li-Jen Hew (author) on July 16, 2018:

Hi Mark. Inner palette! Haha. Hope that works for you. All the best. :)

Li-Jen Hew (author) on July 16, 2018:

Hello Manatita. Thanks! I feel sweet already hearing sweet several times from you. :) Haha I did have time! Unfortunately, I will be more busy soon...:(

Rinita Sen on July 16, 2018:

There is something about paintings and poetry, they gel well together. Paintings have been the perfect metaphor for a wide range of poetry topics. Your poem here is an outstanding example of one of them. Enjoyed the explanation behind the stanzas. Flawless work, Li-Jen!

Mark Tulin from Ventura, California on July 15, 2018:

I have a small palette of friends. Working on my inner palette more.

manatita44 from london on July 15, 2018:

Interesting Li-Jen.

Your mind works in an intriguing way, Sweet and simple explanations. You seem to have time again. Great!

Li-Jen Hew (author) on July 13, 2018:

Sean, thanks for sharing your point of view. I agree, love is a verb. And my pleasure. :)

Ioannis Arvanitis from Greece, Almyros on July 13, 2018:

Love is action, my dear Li-Jen. Pride is an illusion of ego that makes people live in loneliness. You are never vulnerable when you act with Love. So, make the first move...

That's what I see in this lovely piece of your heart.

I like a lot that you give your perception of the poem, it is a first move...

Much Love!

Sean

Hi Jodah, thanks for taking time to understand by rereading and your feedback.

Li-Jen Hew (author) on July 13, 2018:

Hi Mary,

Thanks for rereading my poem! You got it. The spark is still there. Glad you spent time with your friends.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on July 12, 2018:

Interesting poem, Li-Jen. This time, I admit, the meaning wasn't clear to me. I didn't associate the painting, colours etc with people's relationships. After reading your explanation however and re-reading I can clearly see the meaning. Nice work.

Mary Norton from Ontario, Canada on July 12, 2018:

I have to red the lines over and over again to savour the meaning. Today, I have 6 friends I grew up with who came to visit us. We had a wonderful reunion and thanks to them for trying to make this happen. Someone has to initiate to make the relationship happen though the spark is there.

Li-Jen Hew (author) on July 12, 2018:

U have done it again Frank! Testing me to see if I have noticed your copy paste. x)
