Poem: Man Without Empathy

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

"Empty Space" by James Arthur

"Man Without Empathy"

It’s sad when a middle aged man
thinks only of his next conquest,
to satisfy those boyish urges
not wanting to grow up,
not wanting to feel
the compassionate love
of a life long companion
by his side.

Sharing only crumbs of himself
to each one he devours,
hiding his true identity
behind layers of lies.

Chasing dreams of a boy,
playing the role of a man
acting out each scene,
preparing the perfect love bomb
for his next victim.

His words spun in a web of lies,
spewing his cocky, smug attitude
with a guessing game of clues,
callously crushing the last heart
he ignited in his fire ring.

"Grenade" by Bruno Mars

That's great advice.

The emotional roller coaster is devastating.

Thanks for reading.

Lora Hollings on March 16, 2020:

Wonderful description of this type of person who abuses another's trust and their sincerity by pretense and deceit! I've met a couple like this and it can certainly have devastating consequences. But you have to remember, that these individuals aren't worth the emotional price that you've already wasted on them and the sooner you get them out of your life, the better your life will be! Great write, Brenda.

Thank you for caring and for your sincere advice.

I truly believe you are Right! Just gotta keep telling my heart what my brain already knows.

And trying to figure it out...well there just isn't anything logical.

I live in a little town that has gone completely crazy with this virus scare...the store shelves are bare. Everything ftom toilet paper to Meat is gone.

I will do my best to stay healthy.

It is so sweet of you to be concerned about me...Thank You.

Please stay safe and healthy too!

Suzie from Carson City on March 13, 2020:

Save UR self, Brenda...Don't waste your brain power trying to figure it out. The way I see it, we're the better off for it. THEY'RE THE LOSERS!

I actually don't know a single female, who hasn't had at least one unpleasant experience in her lifetime. It Happens!

Take care and try to stay away from crowds until we get this virus scare out of the way! :)

Yes, I suppose my path stumpled upon this delightful, unpleasant playboy.

His romantic ways in the beginning melts your heart. Who knew, right??

Sorry you have had such an encounter.

Thanks for the peace.

It is hard to wrap one's brain around his actions.

Thank you.

Suzie from Carson City on March 13, 2020:

Brenda.....It sounds like perhaps you've known one or 2of these unpleasant creatures. Just the kind of man, we women should avoid like the plague! Problem is,they're very sly & cunning.......Yes,I've known a few myself, girlfriend! Peace, Paula

One can not notice them.

They hide behind sincere politeness while in the public's eye.

They love bomb their victims in the beginning making them believe they have found true love.

It is really sad to realize they cannot really feel emotions.

Maybe they even believe they will change for this one but it doesn't work.

Thanks for reading.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on March 12, 2020:

It's difficult to believe there are men like that, but I know they are out there waiting for the next victim. You described them well Brenda.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on March 12, 2020:

Thank you.

It is difficult to understand how one cannot have feelings, but a narcissist type seems to only pretend...which he does superbly until you are no longer needed.

Thanks for reading and have a great day.

Very powerful and realistic presentation of the lust and desire in those persons who have no value for the sentiments of their partners. Superb presentation.

Lorna Lamon on March 12, 2020:

A powerful write Brenda which I feel describes a narcissistic personality type. Sad to say lack of empathy makes it impossible for them to truly care. You capture the emotions really well in your work. Loved it.
