Laughter is the Best Medicine

They say 'Laughter is the best medicine'. Laughter improves health and helps in healing. And the best thing is that it is free and easy to use. It is infectious, helps in connecting with people, lightens our problems, keeps us focused and alert. Studies have shown that people having a healthy sense of humor live longer than those without, have better focus and better careers.

At this time, the stress and uncertainty, due to the pandemic, shifting to work from home, isolation, feeling of disconnection with the outside world, has impacted lives. There has been a rise in anxiety, depression and other mental disorders. Psychologists advise their patients to watch comedy shows and movies and indulge in laughter to relive from stress and anxiety. Laughter is contagious. Seeing people laughing, automatically brings a smile on our face.

We have observed that children laugh more often than adults. As people grow older, they become too serious and lose the ability to laugh often. It is not surprising that they say childhood days are the best days of our life. Psychologists nowadays advise people to spend more time with children to regain the joys of childhood. By becoming more playful and humorous, we can improve our health and life. People have realized the importance of laughter. We see more of laughter clubs and doctors too advise laughter therapy as a form of treatment. Laughter Yoga is the latest trend today.

It is a form of exercise and breathing technique, that aims to promote joy, bring out our inner child, to let go of stress. It helps us focus on the happier side of life. The workout usually involves stretching, gentle yogic breathing or pranayama, and simulated unrestricted laughter. It is usually performed in a group setting. Laughter yoga is good for cardiovascular health, reduces blood pressure, relieves stress. A general sense of well being is felt as endorphins are released with this workout. As it is a simple workout, it is suitable for everyone and known to bring in changes faster than normal yoga. These laughter clubs are usually free and managed by volunteers and can be easily accessed. This form of workout is especially beneficial for people with high blood pressure, and for people who are stressed or depressed.

Brenda, a talented poet, and a dear friend at HubPages gives us a single word prompt every week, to help inspire our creativity, encouraging us to write a poem, short story, song or any combination. We have great fun trying out new ideas for the word prompt. This week’s word prompt was ‘Laughter’. Our Hubber friends came up with excellent responses. I was challenged by my husband to write a rhyming poem. All these days I preferred to write in Free verse as I have just started my journey into poetry. I feel comfortable writing Free verse poems. This time after giving it quite a lot of reflection, my muse came up with this poem on Laughter. So the delay in creating the response. I hope Brenda and my Hubber friends like it.

Let go of doubts and worries

Release all the inhibitions

It is good to be spontaneous

Laughter needs no definitions.


In the world filled with fears

Laughter brings hope

Forget all the tears

Nothing is beyond your scope.

Laughter takes away the troubles

Helps you forget the pain

Makes life worth the struggles

And there is nothing but gain.


Remove thoughts that block laughter

Let deep feelings rise to the surface

Don’t hesitate to express them freely

Take yourself less earnestly.

Laughter is contagious

Seek laughter whenever you can

Laugh at yourself more often

Uncover the irony of life,


Find your inner child

And laugh at everything

A funny poster, a joke

Anything that makes you smile.

The weight of the world is heavy

For your shoulders alone

Take life lightly, sing like a canary

Laugh away and don’t bemoan.


Life is full of challenges

Don’t let them bog you down

When you play with problems

They transform into opportunity.

Laugh and play with the children

They can transform your world

And take you to a higher place

From where you can view life

like it was a chill run.
