Poem: Keeping 4th of July Spirit

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Summary of poem

Keeping the 4th of July spirit is about how Covid-19 is causing many firework displays to be cancelled. Despite the virus keeping us at bay we can have mini celebrations in our neighborhoods. We can cookout and listen to music. It is the American way.

"American Spirit" by Thomas Rhett

"Keeping 4th of July Spirit"

As COVID-19 gains strength
defeating our efforts to stay at home,
the time on the clock not stopping,
the calendar rolls on.

This fourth of July
no bang illuminating the night sky,
no whistles or palm trees adorning the vault of heaven,
to mark our Independence
with firework displays cancelling across the land.

Facing this challenge together
with our forefathers in mind,
making the moment spectacular
despite the virus keeping us a bay.

With no time to sit and moan
for it’s not the American way,
neighborhoods planning mini celebrations,
keeping our spirits high
amidst social distancing,
with cookouts and music,
recognizing this important day.

Ms. Dora,

Thank you.

The pandemic cannot take away who we are at heart.

Have a great day.

Happy 4th of July.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on July 02, 2020:

True, Brenda, keeping the spirit is important. The pandemic cannot take away our thoughts or our appreciation for history and culture. A different kind of celebration is in order. Happy Fourth of July!

Thanks Ruby,

There is a place about 40 minutes away from my hometown that is having them, but it says no bathrooms...plan accordingly.

Not sure how one does that one.

Enjoy your 4th.

Thanks for reading.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on July 01, 2020:

That's the spirit Brenda. We will have fireworks across the street and celebrate the American way.

BRENDA ARLEDGE (author) from Washington Court House on July 01, 2020:

Thank you.

We will make the best of a bad situation.

It is a difficult time, but we will get there.

Thanks for reading.

This poem takes a positive attitude to the celebrations. I hope you enjoy the occasion. I guess the French will have to do similar on 14th July.

In the UK a lot of celebrations were planned and then cancelled in May to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE Day) at the end of the 2nd World War. We had a lovely time sitting out at the front of our houses and meeting neighbours at a distance.
