Hope Is Sewn

A mountain peak lifts expectation,

Height inferior to hung burning delights,

Deflated heart worn from consolation,

Flames extinguished at the sight.

Gravity tugs my foot,

Nagging me to return to trodden land,

Where footprints bring trails of childhood,

And trace unthinkable plans.

All that's left is letting go,

But stars will sparkle tonight,

The seam of light shows hope is sewn,

Dreams may turn out right.

Poem Explanation

A mountain peak lifts expectation,

Height inferior to hung burning delights,

Deflated heart worn from consolation,

Flames extinguished at the sight.

There are situations beyond our control so our expectations cannot be fulfilled. You think that even after working hard, you can achieve your dreams. Not even a mountain's peak can touch the space, where the stars are "hung". In those moments, friends who you have reached out to offer consolation but you still feel empty. The spirits you once had to pursue your dream diminished once you knew the situation was difficult. I want to show that the stars will always burn brightly but our hearts' "flames", not always.

Gravity tugs my foot,

Nagging me to return to trodden land,

Where footprints bring trails of childhood,

And trace unthinkable plans.

Your conscience which is "gravity" tells you that it's time to snap back to reality, the "land". You have to leave the mountain peak. The decisions you make in pursuing the dream are large steps which aren't like the forgivable mistakes we made as children. Mistakes, the "unthinkable", are part and parcel of our daily routine hence the word "trodden" (crush) if we accumulate the working days. Pursuing the dream cannot be compared because it's life changing.

All that's left is letting go,

But stars will sparkle tonight,

The seam of light shows hope is sewn,

Dreams may turn out right.

There's a saying that goes like good things happen to those who wait. Never mind if you can't pursue the dream now. Hopefully with time, situations will become more favourable, perceptions will change and the dream will materialize.

Haha Frank! Thanks for your comment. Funny how you suddenly pop by without notice. Just like how you surprise readers at the end. You're you and that's good. Haha.

It's thin ice we all walk upon...hoping and yet knowing that hope alone cannot make a dream come true. We fail more often than succeed and yet I can't imagine life without hope, can you?

Li-Jen Hew (author) on February 09, 2019:

Hey Sean, that's very kind of you to say that. Spiritual growth seems too advanced for me. Thanks though!

Ioannis Arvanitis from Greece, Almyros on February 08, 2019:

I love your spiritual growth, my sweet Li-Jen!

Hope is Faith's first steps!

I simply love this, especially the line "The seam of light shows hope is sewn". Wonderfully done, and full of positivity. We all need that seam of light to renew our hope, even when all seems lost.

Thanks Jodah. Yours about building a house is inspiring too. :)

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on February 04, 2019:

An inspirational poem Li-Jen, telling us that even if our dreams are out of reach right now, don't give up on them, because when the time is right they may be realised. As always I love your explanation.
