Poem: Feeling Isolated

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

"Feeling Isolated"

She begins feeling the isolation
of sheltering at home,
as she ponders the idea
of creating an imaginary friend.

Like Tom Hanks
in the movie cast away
talking to Wilson,
a hand made volleyball friend.

Maybe a kitty-cat
sitting on her lap
snuggling on the bed,
or a guard dog
taking her for walks
forcing her to exercise.

But right now
she’s sitting outside on the ground
with her tiny garden trowel,
digging up a flowerbed.

She’s determined with all her might
to succeed,
laughing out loud,
thinking to herself,
this would be easier
if she only had a shovel.

Clive,

She would love to have an animal as a companion, but there is no screen/ storm door.

The landlord will not let her install one because of a special door that doesn't require one to keep out air.

Then if she could get pass this one...which won't happen, she must pay extra - for one cat it is $50.00 month.

So it's gotta be imaginary.

Thanks for reading.

Thelma,

That movie was good, but I must say I liked the one with the volcano better.

There are many things I miss but I am hopeful I will get to do them again one day.

For now it's time for imagination to get me by and focus on my strengthening my inner soul.

Thanks for the read.

Smile...it's just a change in direction. We get bored if we are on the same path too long.

Ms. Dora,

Yes, I think she likes herself very much.

Although talking to herself does seem a bit odd.

So delighted to hear you enjoyed this one.

Thank you for reading and take care.

Beautiful poem. I feel like isolated, too. I miss my weekly walk at the Rhine with my friends. I like the Cast Away movie.

Ruby,

Thank you so much!

Yes, getting out of the house and seeing others is greatly missed.

I think my legs just are not getting enough exercise in this tiny place.

Writing keeps me connected.

I would be totally lost without it, but I can only do that so long before I yearn for human contact.

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for reading.

Seemed like she began to appreciate her own company. We can talk to and laugh with ourselves! I like the poem.

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on March 31, 2020:

I loved the movie ' Cast away ' and I love your poem. I can relate. I have a husband Ray and thank God for him, but at times I feel lonely. I guess it's because I can't go get my hair cut. I can't hug my friends. I can't go to church etc. Hang in there my friend, we'll get through this, until then, let's keep writing and exercising.

Pretty hard work. Times are indeed hard! Scary!
