Poem: Destroying Yourself

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

Poem Summary

Destroying yourself is a poem about someone who is using drugs. He trusts in a feeling when he is high not realizing that he is destroying himself. He hurts loved ones along the way with ever changing mood swings. He tells lies trying to hide this life from others. He lives in confusion.

Destroying Yourself

Mixed emotions,
drug fueled,
lost on a journey by yourself,
hurting loved ones along the way.

Confusion from one moment
to the next
with ever changing moods,
thoughts tangled in a web of lies.

Piece by piece,
life is changing before your eyes,
trusting in a feeling when you are high,
destroying the goodness hiding inside.

Misbah,

Thank You.

You are right.

We should never hate anyone.

Our only hope is eventually he will come to realize and that life will be left behind.

Have a great day!

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on February 16, 2021:

I would say we should hate drugs but not the person who is taking those drugs

the person really needs a lot of attention for leaving the bad habit.

May God Protect everyone Amen!

Well shared Brenda

Thank you for reading my work, Dana.

It is a hard choice when you want the best for someone.

Praying is a constant reminder of how confused the person is at the moment, but likely the only thing that might help.

Dana Tate from LOS ANGELES on September 01, 2019:

One of the most heartbreaking choices I had to make was to leave someone who was destroying themselves. I had to learn I couldn't fix them only pray for them.

Yes, it is such a tragedy to watch someone destroying himself.

Thanks for reading.

Your poem highlights the tragedy behind drugs. I particularly liked your last line which is so often the case.
