Poem -Be your Own Best Friend-Friendship~ a Word Prompt by Brenda Arledge

So, to be our own best friend we need to love ourselves unconditionally. We need to invest time in ourselves and know ourselves better.

Be your Own Best Friend

Be your Own Best Friend

This week's word prompt by Brenda Arledge

This week’s word prompt by Brenda is Friendship. It is a beautiful subject and much has been written about it. Our HubPages friends have already written so many beautiful poems on the subject. I enjoyed reading all of them. At the same time, I was racking my brain for a unique idea for my poem and so the delay. So eventually I decided to go ahead with this idea and wrote this poem.

Rarely do we find true friends who stay with us till the end. We do form friendships, but when they fail to live up to our expectations, the relationships end. When friendships break, it causes us so much heartache, sorrow, disappointment. So, it is better to become our own best friend and stay strong and independent.

How do we Develop Friendship with Ourselves

So how do we develop this friendship with ourselves? We need to be honest and work on ourselves everyday to improve and bring out our best qualities. We need to give time to ourselves to explore our dreams and passions and work towards achieving them. We need to indulge in activities that give us true happiness. As the saying goes, ‘Be your own biggest fan and then you will become your own best friend’.

What the Gita Says

The first step to develop friendship with oneself is to control one's thoughts, and harness the mind to be one's friend.

As Shri Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita

“A man must elevate himself by his own mind, not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well. (Chapter 6, verse 5)”

According to the Gita, our minds are very fickle by nature. Krishna says attaining self-realization can be attained only when the mind is stable. Stability is being calm and same in all circumstances. Too much attachment to material objects or sense objects lead to restlessness of the mind. The first step in a seeker’s journey to attain eternal bliss is control of the mind.

quote

quote

You are your own best friend

Believe in yourself

You can achieve anything

By being true to yourself.

Don’t care what others say

Keep playing the game

The game of life

With its highs and lows

is meant to take you

To greater heights.

Your mind is a powerful tool

Don’t let it run wild

Take control of your thoughts

Become the master of your mind.

There will be impediments

There will be obstacles

Challenge yourself to do your best

And persevere till you triumph.

quote

quote

No matter what life throws at you

Turn it into a wonderful opportunity.

You have got the power in you

To lead a happy complete life.

You may do what is needed

Or do what your love most

Everything is of value

Don’t judge yourself too harsh

Praise yourself, accept yourself,

Laugh at yourself as often as you can

Accept yourself the way you are

And be your own best friend.

Friends come and friends go

Don’t depend on any one

You are complete by yourself

And your own best friend.

Thanks Ann. Appreciate your visit and comments. You are right, self esteem is important. People who are sorted and complete themselves are happier and make friends easily with others.

Ann Carr from SW England on April 18, 2021:

I loved this. I thought I'd commented already but apparently not! Sorry for the delay in visiting.

It's so important to recognise our own assets and abilities, to accept that we should like and be kind to ourselves. Self-esteem is important in so many ways, and if we have that we come across as happier and more friendly, I believe.

This is a great response to Brenda's prompt, Vidya.

Thanks Flourish. Much appreciated. Yes inner kindness is essential for forming friendships with others.

FlourishAnyway from USA on April 17, 2021:

I liked the message that your poem conveyed. We need to ensure that our inner voice is as kind as the words we would grant a stranger.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on April 16, 2021:

Thanks Peggy. I appreciate your visit and comments. That's so true, taking life as it comes is the best way to live. Being able to laugh at oneself is a great quality. And we never feel lonely when we learn to love ourselves and like our own company. Take care and have a great day.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 16, 2021:

Being able to take life as it comes and even to laugh at oneself is important. As you wrote, friends come and go. At my age, many have already passed on. Being one's own best friend is a great place to start!

Hi Chrish, thanks for the visit and the nice comments. Yes only when we are comfortable with ourselves can we be comfortable with others. We can start by caring for ourselves first and then we will automatically care for everyone and everything around us. Have a great day and stay safe.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on April 16, 2021:

Hi Vanita, Thanks for the visit and the nice comments. The wisdom of Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is timeless. It is relevant to us even today. I had not read your poem. I will surely check it out. Thanks for sharing the link. Have a good day, stay safe.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on April 16, 2021:

Hi Brenda, thank you so much for the visit and the lovely comments. It means a lot to me. You give such wonderful word prompts inspiring us to come up with different ideas. Yes it is very difficult to stay calm in the face of adversity, so Lord Krishna advised us to practice meditation and devotion to stay calm. I am trying meditation and deep breathing on a daily basis for its numerous health benefits. Katy Perry is my favorite, and I always listen to her. The journey of life can be long and arduous when we are lonely. So we can start by creating a friendship with ourselves to be happy. Thanks for sharing my poem. Have a great day and keep inspiring us with your wonderful word prompts.

Dear Pamela, thanks for the nice comments. I am so glad you liked the poem. I appreciate your visit and comments a lot. Your poems are beautiful too. And your medical articles are the best. I never miss reading them. Have a good day and stay safe.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on April 16, 2021:

We all know how devastating loneliness can be. So if we could love ourselves and or own company, we could stop harming ourselves. That is why I got this idea of friendship with ourselves first then we can easily make friends with others. Have a good day, staf safe Misbah.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on April 16, 2021:

Thank you John. You and Brenda are my inspiration. I love your poetry. It is straight from the heart. So your comments mean a lot to me as much as Brenda's. Keep writing and keep inspiring us.

Chrish Canosa from Manila Philippines on April 16, 2021:

Being a good friend to other starts from ourselves, so very true. you can't be a good and true friend to anywho if you're not to yourself. Awesome!

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on April 15, 2021:

Great poem

Vanita Thakkar on April 15, 2021:

Nice one, Vidyaji with illustrations from Shreemad Bhagwad Geeta. The quotes are also good.

I had written a poem about being one’s own friend long back, that is available on HubPages at https://letterpile.com/poetry/THE-WAITING-PRINCESS...

You might like it ....

Good day.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on April 15, 2021:

Vidya,

I love this article and poem.

You teach us that we must be our own best friend.

We must not depend on anyone else to do this for us.

You say, "Stability is being calm and same in all circumstances." & to attain eternal bliss is control of the mind.

This is great advice. I sometimes fail in this area.

It's hard to remain calm in all circumstances.

All of your quotes represent the true meaning behind your words.

The video of the song by Katy Perry is terrific.

Your words No matter what life throws at you

Turn it into a wonderful opportunity.

Remebering these words will help one along life's journey.

Great writing. I will post a link in the article.

Pamela Oglesby from Sunny Florida on April 15, 2021:

Misbah Sheikh from The World of Poets on April 15, 2021:

What a wonderful take on Brenda's challenge. As John said, completely different and unique. Yes, I agree, it's very important to be friends with ourselves first. As they say, be the change you want to see in others.

I enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing

Blessings
