Poem: A Wake For One

I am a writer. My passion is poetry. I feel words connect people together and help us to understand the feelings we share.

"I Wasn't Enough For You" by Hollyn

poem-a-wake-for-one

"A Wake For One"

Mourning a loss together,
his left hand touching her back,
her right hand touching his leg,
tears flowing
embracing one another in a familiar bond.

Her heart cannot bear any greater pain,
until his distinct speech
cuts through her like a knife
etching the words,
You are not family.

Banishing her from the funeral reception,
leaving her alone
with a wailing heart,
confusion twisting through her mind,
unable to fathom his choice
excluding her at this point in time.

She sits in solitude,
remembering times shared
with tears streaming down her cheek,
wishing she could see their loved one
one more time.

This is a very powerful poem, Brenda. You capture the sadness and bewilderment of this person who has, in a sense, been betrayed by someone who had been very close to her.

Excellent work!
