Poem-A Memorable Beach Party on a Beautiful Summer Day- Response to Word Prompt of Week 27

I love poetry. I am a voracious reader and am passionate about writing. I have recently started my foray into poetry.

Summer means fun, friends, beach and the sea

Summer means fun, friends, beach and the sea

Word Prompt Week 27-Summer

Brenda, our dear friend and a great poet gave us the word prompt ‘Summer’ this week. The word prompt brought childhood memories to mind. During the summer vacations we always went to stay at our grandparents’ place which was near the sea. The sea and the beach were a great attraction for us because the city where we lived was land locked and there was no access to the beach. A visit to our grandparents’ place meant a compulsory visit to the beach. Summer vacations meant picnics and fun. My grandparents were very sportive and always looked forward to our visit to have fun and spend the vacation with us.

Summer will end soon enough, and childhood as well.

— George R.R. Martin

About the Poem

This poem is about one such day spent at the beach, swimming, tanning, playing and watching the sunset at the end of the day. We loved to watch the sunset. The different colors in the sky during the sunset filled us with excitement. We would laugh and shout and play like nothing else mattered. We would return home tired but exhilarated and a feeling of a well spent day. Summer vacation meant no school, no homework, lots of candy, ice cream and never-ending fun with friends.

The Poem

On a Perfect summer Day

When the sun was shining bright

And the birds were singing merrily

A beautiful day for a beach picnic

The children chorused cheerily.

So we packed a picnic basket

With delicious bites and a blanket

And a bottle of delectable wine

Adding some flowers and some cheese

We started for our picnic on the beach.

The ocean stirs the heart, inspires the imagination and brings eternal joy to the soul.

— Robert Wyland

As we swayed to the sound of the waves

We were drawn into the spell of the sea

Like nothing in the world was more import

And to the soul there was eternal joy and peace.

Building castles in the sand

with the sun on our shoulders

Watching the waves crash the shore

Swimming and tanning and walking

Like nothing else mattered anymore.

Sunsets are nature’s way of proving that no matter what happens, every day can end beautifully.

— Anonymous

sunset sublime

sunset sublime

As we enjoyed the sea surf

The sun slowly started to set

what a glorious sight it was

To see the sky illuminate with

Colors, red, orange, pink and blue.

There is magic in the air

When day meets night at twilight

When peace and calm pervade

We feel a connection with the divine.

Know what you want to do, hold the thought firmly, and do every day what should be done, and every sunset will see you that much nearer the goal.

— Elbert Hubbard

When the feet sink in the sand

With the cool breeze on the face

Hearing the cries of the seagulls

To feel a peace sublime.

There is nothing like the

Time spent at the beach

On a bright summer day

To take all the cares away.

This summer beach picnic

With my very favorite people

A day full of fun, a day well spent,

Watching the sun set in all its glory,

Is a summer I will never forget.

Summer-An Acrostic Poem

Summers mean great fun and frolic

Under the sky, suntan on the sand

Meet the friends and picnic on the beach

Memories plenty to be made

Enjoy each day, it will soon be over

Regret not when the summer is done

Thanks Rosina. Yes, watching the sunset on a beach is quite exhilarating. I am glad you liked my response to Brenda's word prompt. Have a great day.

Rosina S Khan on September 02, 2021:

Wonderful poetry based on the prompt, "Summer". I especially liked the imagery of scenes at twilight and sunset. I loved the acrostic poem as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Manatita, for the update. You are right, in our enthusiasm to celebrate, we forget the spiritual significance of the festival. The Gita teaches us life lessons which are relevant even today Have a blessed day dear friend.

manatita44 from london on September 01, 2021:

I really loved it, but then I lost it. I especially loved the spiritual treatment that you had given it. In some ways, India is as bad as we are at Christmas. Food, family, fun, etc. But you did justice to the spiritual aspects and included very salient chapters. I'll try to find it again. Peace.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on September 01, 2021:

Thank you Manatita. Good to see your comments. Much appreciated. There's one more on Krishna awaiting your opinion. I would love to know your thoughts on that article. I thought you might like it too. Stay safe, have a great day.

Oh no...please leave it.

I just never thought of taking flowers with me on a picnic.

It is a nice touch. Just didnt know people did this one.

Memories are wonderful. Leave it in.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on August 30, 2021:

Thanks for the update Brenda.Took flowers just to add some color to the picnic spread. Does it seem not relevant. Should I remove it from the poem. Please let me know.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on August 30, 2021:

Vidya

Why did you take flowers on a picnic?

It sounds like you have lovely memories of those days! I could almost feel the sand between my toes while reading your poem.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on August 29, 2021:

Thanks Brenda for the wonderful words. You describe it so well. This week's word prompt brought back the memories of childhood when we used to eagerly wait for summer vacation and the trip to our grandparents home. It was a welcome change from the school routine and we used to have so much fun with the friends there. The fact that there was a beach near their place was an added attraction for us. I always loved the sea and the sun and summer meant both these. Thanks for all your efforts and time, giving us prompts every week and for being a great motivates in our writing journey. Take care and have a blessed day, my friend.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on August 29, 2021:

Thanks Chitrangada for the nice comments. I am happy you enjoyed reading my response. I agree with you, life was so simple back then. We had simple joys and were happy all the time. Today's children are much burdened and now with the virus and all the restrictions, they are not free to play or go outdoors. It is sad that they have been deprived of a carefree and happy childhood. Those really were wonderful days. Take care, and have a blessed day my friend.

VIDYA D SAGAR (author) on August 29, 2021:

Thanks Bill. I appreciate your kind words. I am glad you liked my response. Means a lot to me. Till now I have only written about my own experiences and what I have seen around me and other information that could be useful to people in some way. My dream is to become a creative writer like you someday. Please keep motivating us with your wonderful short stories. Take care and have a blessed day dear friend.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on August 29, 2021:

Vidya

As a child, going to the beach is so exciting and you got to experience this while visiting your grandparents.

Your memories must be really special.

In your poem you tell us how on a bright sunny day you pack some goodies for a picnic on the beach.

You become spellbound as you heard the sound of the waves crashing.

Nothing else mattered.

Your soul felt happy & peaceful as you enjoyed building sandcastles.

You enjoyed watching a beautiful sunset full of colors feeling a certain magic connecting you with the divine.

There is no other feeling like this as your feet sink in the sand, air blows across your face.

It's a day that takes all your cares away.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful memories with us.

Those are special times you will always remember.

I enjoyed picturing this wonderful memory of yours by the painting in your words.

I posted a link in the word prompt article.

I loved your thoughts about summer and your lovely poem too, Vidya. Your poem reminded me of when I lived in Mobile and we would often head to the Gulf on weekends to visit. The ocean was always beautiful. You always got a sense of eternity when you looked at it and I remember how my daughter loved playing in the sand. It was always so much fun to build sand castles and find sand dollars. Thank for a very enjoyable read and for evoking these wonderful memories for me!

This is a great response to Brenda's prompt. You always write such good poetry.

I particularly liked:

"When the feet sink in the sand

With the cool breeze on the face

To feel a peace sublime."

Every line of the poem was good and it took us back to those childhood memories. Isn't that just so special?
