You will always have a piece of my heart- a poem about first loves.

Author:

Dana Tate has been painting pictures with words from childhood. She has a passion for life and a heart for romance.

pieceofmyheart

First romances don't always end in a fairytale. But no matter where your paths take you, that person will always have a piece of your heart.

When I first saw you, I was in love with another

And then through the years, you and I became lovers.

No stronger love surely, could ever exist.

It's the most beautiful feeling, on this I must insist.

And if years ago, someone told me this would be so

I would have laughed, and calmly, shook my head no.

For the love I feel for you took me completely by surprise.

For yesterday you were my friend, but today you are my life.

And you are:

My confidante.

My backbone.

My comforter through the night.

And you are:

My heart.

My inspiration.

And the apple of my eye.

But sometimes I take you for granted, and I know that this is so.

So I wrote you this poem, so you always will know.

How I love you..

Need you...

Respect, and adore you.

I hope I'll always love you this way.

I hope from me you will never stray.

But I know that life brings changes so,...if we should ever part...

know, that always, and forever, you'll have a piece of my heart.

pieceofmyheart

Love with all your heart, soul and mind.

Being in love is a beautiful thing. The sun shines brighter; the sky looks a little more clearer and the world seems like a wonderful place to be. Love is the most powerful emotion a person can ever experience. The giddy feeling of love doesn't always last forever, but we can fall into a comfortable companionship and friendship that can last forever if, it's cared for and nurtured.

Love cannot be taken for granted it must be respected and treated like the cherished gift that it is. Whether this is your first love or your fiftieth it must be seen and cared for as a rare jewel. Without love the world is a bleak place to be in.

There's a thin line between love and hate.

There's a thin line between love and hate. Love can sour quickly when it's not nurtured or, taken for granted. Most couples don't fall out of love, but fall out of respect. Love is blind and we are willing to put up with little things we don't like in the beginning. The funny thing about love is it changes. It doesn't make sense. There's no reason or rationale to it, it just is.

We can't control love, or who we love because it takes us by surprise. If we could control love most of us would; especially after being hurt the first time around. We would try to moderate it or not love as hard over fear of being hurt. God is His infinite wisdom took the ability to control that out of our hands and so we love.

What does your "ideal love" look like?

Why do you feel some relationships fail?

Why is it so hard to stay in love?

Most people fantasize about love and romance in a fairy tale way, but love is not a fairy tale. They want to stay in love forever and, are unrealistic about the union. Some people are in love with being in love but have no clue how to be in a relationship; so when problems arise they're quick to walk away.

Many people who walk away are searching for something unattainable, which is, perfection. There is no perfect person all relationships takes compromise, sacrifice and respect. Love starts out with passion, but after that fizzles you're at a cross road that either dies or grows into something deeper and lasting. Love can last if it is respected. If it is not respected, no matter how hard you love, eventually it will die.

Unfortunately, I haven't found that "rare one" but I haven't given up hope. I was madly in love with this guy and this poem was written for him but these words became prophetic...

But, I know that life brings changes...

So, if we should ever part...

Know that always and forever...

You'll have a piece of my heart.

Thank you for reading and appreciating my poem.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on August 23, 2019:

Very good write.

Yes, I believe those who seem to fall out of love are looking for perfection.

They want or need to feel that constant attention making them feel better about themselves.

It is possible though to find those rare ones which still believe in romance for eternity.

I hope yours is one.

Tim...

Thank you for reading and leaving a comment. Unfortunately love for some means "until problems or, financial difficulties, do us apart." Real love grows deeper over time. It's sad that some people will live their whole lives without knowing true love.

Tim Truzy from U.S.A. on October 09, 2018:

Hi, Dana,

Wonderful work. So many people mistake lust for love without realizing "loving" someone involves enduring the changes that will come. Often, I've told young couples: "Imagine all of the possibilities that could possibly happen. Then, ask yourself: "Will I dessert this person?"

You were dead on: if you don't have respect, love can quickly disappear.

Loved your work, Dana.

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Tim

My Poem:

This is better than good. The words you chose are exquisite! I especially love this line.

" Your voice a Melody that would lead me to the end of an impossible quest with you as the missing piece in the puzzle of my life"

Did you write this for someone you loved?

My poem on June 01, 2018:

Is this good I did it on my own?

when I first met u I knew you were the one for me the one that would make me whole your eyes are like the light in a dark world that I would be forever trying to get to. Your voice a Melody that would lead me to the end of an impossible quest with you as the missing piece in the puzzle of my life I would hold that piece till the end of my days and never let anyone hurt you anymore I would be like the guardian of a precious jewel you are my jewel im your guardian and anyone who hurts you is an enemy to me. I will forever love you

Thank you Mark Tulin for appreciating my poem. Its funny I wrote this poem twelve years ago to someone I was madly in love with. We started out as friends but our love grew slowly over time. One day I just woke up and realized I loved this person. Our precious relationship, meaning our friendship, then love, lasted for over twenty years. We fell out of love but not respect. Today we are still the best of friends.

Mark Tulin from Santa Barbara, California on March 14, 2018:

It’s not easy talking from a place of love. I appreciate it when someone does it in a poem. Thanks

Congratulations!! You certainly seem to have a good idea how to keep a marriage strong. I have witnessed so many couples abuse and take advantage of the love their partner has for them. I know of someone who had a good man for 25 years. She used and abused and belittled this man every chance she got, even in front of others. He ended up having an affair and finally left and married the other woman. Love is something to cherish and not be taken for granted. We must not assume the other person will not eventually get tired.

Peg Cole from Northeast of Dallas, Texas on November 10, 2015:

You've hit the nail on the head with your observations. Respect is the key to lasting relationships. It's about the way people talk to one another, the way they talk about their partner when they're apart as well. Love can remain strong through the years and when it does, it's beautiful. We're about to celebrate our twenty-seventh year of marriage.

So much info in so few words. Tostoly could learn a lot.

Word55, first happy fathers day! Yes first loves are special. Unfortunately my first love did not last. Through the years I had a hard time finding a true love, it wasn't always their fault I had to understand myself to understand what I was looking for in a man and know my true self-worth. I know that love can last forever, I have seen it and it is the most beautiful gift if you can truly find it.

Al Wordlaw from Chicago on June 15, 2014:

Hi again Dana, As you can see, I'm catching up on a lot of reading today. A peaceful Father's Day is allowing me to do just that. This was another gorgeous poem, a poem of your first love, Wow! The first love lays the path of love and how good love should be in the future. Well, love can last forever. Did you know that?
