"On Elissa...We Will Sail" Poem

A Continual Saga of a "Younger-than-Now" Poet from the Highly-Esteemed State of Texas proclaiming more Poetic-able Prose using just pure wit

Welcome Aboard for this "Manly" Poem. A Poem that called from the very "depths" of it being drafted...to "hurry-up" and finish. Let's get Underway...Shall We?!

"On Elissa...We Will Sail!"

It is my hope that you can put down your daily "normalcy" and regular duties that you must attend to...briefly for a few minutes. And, let the simplicity of an Open Water Sailing Adventure take over your imagination. Take you far away across the Sea (or at least out of the Harbor) on a beautiful Sailing Vessel: "The Elissa".

Sometime...in the early 90's...I was able to spend the night on this amazing ship. And as customary for the overnight stay: Everyone on board had to post night guard duty. So somewhere about 2-3am, I was standing "Nightwatch" duty in the Forward Steering Cabin when my imagination took over and I realized that Sailors had been standing "Nightwatch" duty on Her deck going back to the 1800's.

The boat pulled quietly against her ropes in the dark brown waters, as She was floating there in the late night hours. I could see out across the night sky towards newer, huger Supertankers across the Channel from where She was tied. In the quietness there, an occasional insomniac Sea Gull would caw out, and an occasional fish would jump out of the water, near the boat. The block and tackle rattled every now then. And ever so slightly, with each slow moving small bump of a wave that would gently raise Her up and down, as it slid under Her hull, the ship would strain her moorings like She wanted to break free. Even with the slightest of waves, She beckoned to be released from the stall.

"Creeee-aaa-kkkk, Creak, Creak, Cree-eee'-eee-eak," The ropes squealed and strained all night, as if they were twisting in pain. It was the loudest sound in the quiet night air.

What would've happened...if Her Crew of Old would have listened to Her demanding plea against the ropes...and readied Her to Sail that instant...?

Join me...ManlyPoetryMan...as We set sail on the "Elissa" with Her Old Crew at the ready...and Set sail for Open Waters!

Ambience | Sailing Ship | Listen To The Sea, It Calls You!

The Boarding Plank squeaks as we begin to step on board this Gallant Ship...

Time to gather up your "Sea-legs"...Up on Deck...as the ship begins to sway and dip.

Her Majestic Sails are furled...and She rocks back and forth in her mooring...

She tugs at the ropes keeping Her there...For Her...being docked here must seem boring.

“There is something special“…I think to myself… “About this Ship”…

I get the feeling somehow…”I’ve been on Her before…on a high-seas trip".

For one moment while I look up to one of Her tallest Masts...

I can see Sailors of Old...Up there on the Boom...as in the Past.

A quiet call is heard: "Elissa...We will Sail Away on You"...

A ghostly reply...from on Board...from an almost Visible Crew.

Also, from down below the Deck...down below in the Quarters...

"Elissa...We will Sail Away on You...We are just awaiting Orders."

She responds with an abrupt pull against Her bindings...that makes the dock pierings sway...

She does not hesitate for Open Waters..."All Hands prepare to Cast Off...and get Underway!"

Ropes are thrown clear of their tie downs...Magically...the Anchor begins to hoist from below...

She backs out of Her stall the minute She is set free...Suddenly, we turn hard reverse Starboard, without tow.

The Jibs foremast...on this "Official Tall Ship of Texas"...are set flying…

And for sure...We are leaving the dock well behind…there’s no denying!

Main Sails unfurl sharply and are secured..."Elissa" now begins to set Sail...towards the Sea...

She passes the Modern Vessels around Her in the Channel...as they all turn away and let Her be.

The Channel begins to open at Mouth's End...There is Calm Waters Ahead…Leeward...

We look to the Captain's Wheel...Turning freely...to see what new heading we’ll take forward.

The Wheel begins to hold fast...As we pick up speed on a new heading and course...

"Fathoms" are called out at regular intervals...but again...I couldn't tell you the source.

The Ship turns hard to Port...and rides out into the Open Bay...

Past the Bolivar Peninsula Ferry "Gilchrist"...as "Elissa" pushes waves into a salty spray.

Passengers upon the Ferry...take a double take... with great surprise...

A Sailing Galleon of Old...has passed them swiftly...and off their front bow is where She lies.

The Crew slowly becomes apparent...as they move up and down the Fore and Main Topmasts...

Working each line and belaying pin for each Sail...and calling out each Sail by name...real fast.

I see an image of a Captain who is saying: "Select a Heading now...due South"...

We leave behind those on the Ferry...Standing on their Deck with Open Mouth.

And vanish into a strange afternoon fog...

And hear the Captain saying..."Make Note to Ship's log"

"At 3 hours past Noon...We met an eerie fog...after encounters with many strange boats at Sea...

And headed back to Port...because of strange landmarks along the Coast...where they didn't use to be."

And when the fog had lifted...and We found ourselves tied back...at the dock...

I looked back across the deck...as the Ship against Her ropes...began to rock.

And realized...I might have had a momentary unexplained vi-sion...

Where I found myself Sailing with the Crew of Old...Navigating across the O-cean.

Was it merely...a dream...as my imagination was intrigued by this old boat...

As She rocks gently in the waves under Her hull...where She lies tied afloat.

Could I have actually experienced Her setting Sail once again...with her Old Crew ?

I looked up towards Her lashed-down Sails...As once again a strong gust blew through.

"On Elissa...We will Sail"...I thought I heard...One more time though very, very soft...

This time I could almost barely see...a young Sailor pointing outward from the Crow's nest loft.

And in the stirring Sun ray's...formed by a heat wave mirage...all around in the air...

I can see Her Crew diligently doing their duties...Above board...all across the boat there.

This time I truly saw them all...the Crew staring out to Sea...from their appointed station...

I saw each had a smile...and an excitement for their task...that defies proper explanation.

I knew that this crew from long ago was part of this Ship's Spirit of Adventure...Forever and Always...

With that, I reached down to remove the ropes that kept Her tied here...Where She strains and sways.

The Tall Ship Elissa (in Her moorings)

The Tall Ship Elissa (in Her moorings)

As the Crew readied Her once again to be free from Her bindings...

They are each happy to help remove Her from Her ropes...I am finding.

The Captain calls out to me..."Well done there, Sailor, Well Done"...

Then shouts, "We'll have Her back before too long...before the Rising Sun."

"For now She wants to Sail where She can gain top speed...

Don't tell Her Museum Keepers about us...there is no need."

He said, "We take Her out each Night...that She strains to be out of Her stall"...

"As soon as She starts pulling on those ropes...We always hasten to Her call."

With that I found myself standing alone on the dock, staring at an empty boat slip...

I went to holler out: "What Just Happened?"...but then...I suddenly bit my lip.

For some unexplained reason my boat tour had turned into a "Sea-going" Mystery...

And I had seen...all through time...the Crew that always took her out to Sea.

It was my secret for now...that I would have to save for a later day...

Because for one moment...I was part of the Crew...that's what I heard the Captain say.

For me and this Strange Adventure...We each went our separate way...

As I slowly got back into my grind...of my Day to Day.

Deadlines and Bills to Pay...Filled my thinking of my own Ocean of Stress...

And I forgot about my experience on that Ship...as I took care of busi-ness.

Not ever to mention it...or even recall a thing...

Or ever have an occasion....that this memory could bring.

Until years later...in my sleep...I woke out of a dream...that I must have been in...

Finding my bed and myself...were still in the same place...where we have always been.

I slowly wakened to the World around me...Until later in the Day...in the News...I find...

That "Elissa" had Gone and Vanished without a trace at Sea...Guess this "Adventure" was not only in my Mind.
