Of Truth and Freedom We Sing

A proud people taken from their Africa,

an act that was so unkind,

Were forced into slavery by new hosts,

some left families behind.

Thousands taken by the wrongdoers,

then brought to a new land.

The reasons to be removed so unfairly,

none were to understand.

Refrain:

A thank you to the poor mistreated ones,

Your courage and strength all so grand.

When you were taken away on that day,

You gave new meaning to your new land.

With a strength of the great eagles, that day of freedom you did fly,

strong spirits shown, over time grown, its message, we all must try.

We can't give up, keep our hope, our strong faiths shall lead the way,

There will be a new, better tomorrow, just make the best of every day.

A proud people were once displaced

Their lives hurt in every way,

Taken from their most sacred lands,

all the families could not stay.

Native ones of America, cultures dashed,

as the lives of many were lost,

Once such a grand home now destroyed,

to have been no greater cost.

Refrain:

A thank you to the poor mistreated ones,

Your courage and strength, all so grand.

The human spirit will always be so strong,

in every heart it does belong,

There's no force greater meaning to destroy,

in our souls, will remain its song.

Now America is powerful and to withstand,

all enemy, their evil contempt.

We shall be united and forever to stand,

Put down our foes, every attempt.

Refrain:

A thank you to the poor mistreated ones,

your courage and strength, all so grand,

You've made our country stronger today,

As we're united in love, across this land.

With a strength of the great eagles, that day of freedom you did fly,

Strong spirits shown, over time grown, its message, we all must try.

We can't give up, keep our hope, our strong faiths shall lead the way,

There will be a new, better tomorrow, just make the best of every day.

Beautiful and sensitive tribute to abused peoples of the earth. At one time or another, every group of people were enslaved, abused, attacked, conquered. And most were also the conquerors and the enslavers at some point too! Sadly, it is the story of human history. Let us hope we are finally growing beyond that sad and destructive pattern!

You certainly have a way with words in this tribute, reminding us all that no matter what life brings there is always a better tomorrow on the verge. Good reminder for us as a society, but also as individuals.
