Domestic Abuse

Domestic violence is a problem worldwide. Twenty people per minute are abused by an intimate partner in the United States. The World Health Organization (WHO) states 1 in 3 women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual abuse by an intimate partner in their lifetime. Men are also abused and it is estimated that 1 in 9 men experience physical abuse by an intimate partner in the United States.

The lockdowns during the COVID-19 pandemic have increased the exposure of women to a partner that is abusive. The social and economic impact of the lockdowns have resulted in limited services to aid victims.

The result of living with abuse may be injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder, living in fearfulness or even contracting a sexually transmitted disease. There is help availalbe foe these victims.

The man I chose to live with in my life

I thought true love would see us through

How naive I sure was in my youth

Staring ahead, not seeing any path

The nightmares continue every night

The fear immobilizes my every move

The man that I thought I could trust

I wish that I could surely remove

We used to laugh and have some fun

I thought life would change with our baby

I thought we would be so much better

I found out our world became a swirl

Stuck and I can’t see how to get away

Threats that paralyze me each day

No one to tell or I will have hell to pay

This secret is such a heavy load to bear

Put on a turtleneck to hide the bruises

A little extra makeup may work to cover

Hold the tears around family and friends

I need help but where can I find it now

I pray and pray through out each day

I can’t call the police or I will pay

He said he would shoot me that day

I simply don’t know how to get away
