Never Turn the Other Cheek: A Poem

Val enjoys writing his own style of what resembles poetry, just hoping to catch someone's heart on the same page.

I never turned the other cheek

for that second proverbial slap

even while I was little 'n weak

I didn't fall for any of that crap.

So many people endure abuse

as if they are asking for more

not aware they could choose

what's behind a bigger door.

Be it family, a friend, or a sweetheart

no one is really worthy of that sacrifice

so let's be observant, savvy and smart

before turning as losers in our own eyes.

Life is too short for some matching test

other than a possible short probation

but if it's not really serving us best

why allow it to grow into fixation.

Sometimes we fall for a promised change

giving second and third chance to that love

only to see it going more and more strange

while we fall for every new song of our dove.

Thus, the only time I may turn the other cheek

if a kiss is coming hotter than the first one

that's the "abuse" I'll endure, so to speak

not thinking to either fight or to run.
