Inspirational Words Often Encourage Us To Take Chances

This poetry is inspired by the word prompt "chance" offered by Brenda Arledge in her article 'Word Prompts Help Creativity - Week 51. It is wonderful to have Brenda back on board and, once again, inviting us to use her weekly word prompts to inspire and encourage our creative writing.

I must admit, that I actually looked forward to these prompts as a means of rousing my muse. I only realised how much I relied on Brenda's prompts when she had to take a break from writing them. The word "chance" is an excellent prompt and I am sure will inspire some worthy responses from fellow writers.

Many of us, unfortunately, are afraid to take risks or chances. We often feel safer just staying where we are in the security of our current lifestyle, relationship, home, job etc. But sometimes life just cries out for you to take a chance. In these poems, I attempt to convey that message.

Life is about trusting our feelings and taking chances, losing and finding happiness, appreciating the memories and learning from the past.

Take Your Chances

Life’s full of decisions,

God gave us all free will.

“Play safe or take your chances,”

I struggle with that still.

We like to have security

For our families and ourselves,

But if we never take a risk,

On missed chances, we’ll dwell.

Things happen for a reason,

At least that’s what I believe.

If opportunities arrive

Then be open to receive.

Of course, weigh up the options,

But don’t dismiss it without thought,

For if you don’t grab those chances

Your success will come to nought.

It’s easy to stay where you are,

Do what you’ve always known.

Stay at home, all safe and sound,

On adventures never roam.

Just do your secure mundane job,

It’s a risk to give it up.

But if you took some chances

You may overflow your cup.

Eating, sleeping, working

Is all some people do.

We only have one life to live

So I think there’s more - don’t you?

Chance and luck are intertwined,

Some even call it ‘fate.’

To take a chance you must be quick,

Don’t decide when it’s too late.

Don’t put off ‘til tomorrow

If you have a chance today.

Tomorrow may not ever come -

Don’t throw it all away.

Be passionate and chase your dreams,

Don’t say, “It can’t be done!”

Have faith in your abilities.

It’s your life, be Number One.

If you’re not happy, change it,

Chase the goals you’ve always craved.

Never regret the chances missed,

Or you’ll take them to your grave.

So, grasp chances presented,

Embrace challenges with pride.

Attack them with your heart and soul,

Then you’ll feel fulfilled inside.

Don't be afraid of taking chances, if you win you will be happy, and if you lose you will learn something new.

CHANCE ~ an Acrostic Poem

Capture every moment

Have courage in your heart

Adventures are within your grasp

Never say, “It can’t be done!”

Chances are fleeting, then they’re gone

Embrace them when they come

Just keep taking chances and having fun.

Living on the Volcano

I’m not one for taking chances.

Change just makes me cringe.

I’m brave but I’m not fearless,

Unforced risk is not my thing.

If change is forced upon me

I will take it in my stride,

But it isn’t what I relish,

And from it, I’d rather hide.

So, tell me how you do it?

Is gambling in your blood?

Do you throw caution in the stream,

And make it cause a flood?

I’ve always been too cautious,

Never want to rock the boat.

Too often though it springs a leak,

And is hard to keep afloat.

Despite my being careful

Things happen to disrupt,

So, I’ll live on the volcano

And just hope it won’t erupt!

You can't go through life protecting yourself from everything. You have to take chances. Because if you don't, then you may as well not be living.
