My Halloween Costume Dilemma

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

As magical Halloween beckons

Witches and ghosts fill my dreams

Lifting the veil between our worlds

When nothing is quite what it seems

I decided to make my costume

For the annual Halloween event

I had planned the perfect witch’s dress

My labour would be well spent

The witching hour was approaching

My time was fast running out

With stitches crooked and wonky

I really had my doubts

Looking nothing like the dress I’d planned

It was misshapen, ugly and bare

In all my pent-up frustration

I threw it on top of the chair

I climbed into bed for a well-earned rest

And as sleep gave way to my dreams

A latent ghost was sewing my dress

By the light of some shadowy beams

My witch’s hat was beautifully formed

By a one-eyed black cat called Raven

A vampire slept in quiet repose

Quite at home in my bedroom haven

I woke to a night of remembrance

Filled with dread and wretched despair

But what met my gaze was the perfect costume

Draped magically over the chair

The Halloween party was in full swing

The band played a ghoulish tune

I toasted the spirits of Halloween

As we danced around the moon

Lovely poem, Lorna. So descriptive that it paints a vivid picture in my mind. I loved the one-eyed cat Raven, which adds a nice touch alongside the idea of dancing around the moon.
