Middle Passage

Samuel Malik Canty: the Word Bird. I am the author of Five Poetry Books, I understand my Purpose, and my words are my proof...

middle-passage

The Ships were always dark and dank, filled with a stench that was offensive to the nose and soul...

Screaming was considered normal to the crew, who only saw profit and not people...

Thick chains, guns, brutal force were tools used to beat the Africans into total submission...

The smell of death seep out from the bottom of the ship, mingling with a repugnant odor that reeks with abuse from those stacked below the deck like dying fish...

Festering wounds, maggot buffet, courtesy of those who refuse to see their captive as human...

Lined up, stacked up like gutted fish waiting to be slaughtered...

Force feeding, raping and beating of women and men who tried to resist their captivity occurred on most slave ships...

Jumping overboard with children in arms, in the belly, was seen as an honorable thing to do...

Clanging of heavy chains that bound the neck, feet, hands, could be seen on every African, regardless of age, size or gender...

Middle Passage...Where the overstuff bellies of sharks and other sea creatures feasted on those who were thrown overboard because of excess or defiance...

Thrown overboard because of sickness, or unable to withstand dreadful inhumane conditions...

Brutality was the only reality on those ships...

Middle Passage...Where unsuspecting Africans became human cargo who were forcefully transported across the Atlantic to be enslaved...

Middle Passage … A fatal journey, the history books will never be able to tell the actual numbers of those who did not survive those trips across the waters...

Middle Passage...The coastal waters became a graveyard filled with Black people, the spirit of those stolen lives still dwell under the ocean floors...

Millions upon millions of ancestors did not survive the horrors of the Slave trade and the Middle Passage...

Do you hear the drums? No lie can live forever... Do you hear the drums? Coming from the bottom of the ocean floor as truth begins to march into the conscience of the world...

Middle Passage... The Waters Still Weep...
