Honoring Our Heroes

A few years back, I wrote a poem honoring the fallen, those lost in warfare, those who answered the call, but never made it back home again.

Memorial Day is the day set aside to honor them, the fallen!

I’ve written about my huge respect for those willing to put their lives on the line; defending this Country, defending us, defending our freedom, but I’ve yet to dedicate to Veterans.

Although any words that I or anyone else could come up with, could never measure up to their sacrifice.

I dedicate this article to all Veterans -

You all are a special breed and I believe, called for this!

For You

Modern Day Warriors

Modern day warriors, out there, putting in the time

You understand, when others don’t, just what it is, that is on the line

You appreciate and fight for, just what it is, that we all cherish here

Because you do, we go forward with our day, not looking over our shoulder, not living in fear

Thank you Veterans, every day, you are treasured far more than you know

Whether serving today or in the past, while waiting for it to be your turn to go

Out protecting our fought-for liberty, out there insuring, free, we'll always be

Unselfishly sacrificing, insuring that future generations, get to enjoy, living free

It is with grateful hearts, when we say, Thank You, on this and every Veteran’s Day

We can’t all put it on the line as you all do, but we can Support and we can Pray

It must be unsettling at times, when so much of your time, is spent away

Yet you go, time and again, packed up in an instant, and then you are on your way

Time away from family, missing births, special occasions…the local football game

You may not ask for any acknowledgement, but it is freely given, just the same

You are modern day heroes, putting in the time

You are our Modern day warriors, out there, putting it all on the line

The most modest and selfless among us, the most generous of all mankind

No greater gift than those willing to lay down their lives, no greater individuals will you ever find

Be safe when out in harm's way, while putting in the time

Thanks to all of you, who have, who are, who will be, protecting that precious line

Happy Veteran's Day, thank you for your Service!
