Love or Lust - Two Faces of a Coin

Umesh is a freelance writer contributing his creative writings on varied subjects in various knowledge and educational sites in internet.

Preface

Love and lust are two different entities but many times they both are present in a situation and it becomes difficult to distinguish between the two. This poem is conceived to understand the duality of human behaviour in respect to these characteristics.

Love or lust

The childhood reflections,
Changing into adulthood.
The early affections,
Giving rise to loving mood.

The ecstasy of love,
And longing underneath.
Is it simply a yearning?
Or lust beneath.

They would appear as,
Two faces of a coin like.
Whenever you toss them,
They would not be alike.

It is not easy to differentiate,
Love from the lust.
Innocent gets trapped,
In the elusive nest.

Is it inbuilt in the humans?
Such duality of nature.
Or it is the culmination of,
Character immature.

The question still persists,
It is love or lust.
The prudent and wise,
Give an answer must.

Endnote

The perception of love might differ from male to female but the issue raised in this poem 'Love or lust' is the coexistence of both in a particular situation. This can bring duality in the actions of people and sometinmes can create fearful consequences.

Dora, thanks a lot for your observations.

Dora Weithers from The Caribbean on July 29, 2020:

Both are healthy in the right circumstances. It is very important that love be preeminent. Lust without love could trigger unwanted behaviors. Thanks for making us think about it.

Flourish, thanks for your virtuous comment. Highly appreciate.

FlourishAnyway from USA on April 13, 2020:

Although they can go together one surely outlasts the other and is purer. One can imitate and pretend to be the other, like fool’s gold and gold.

Mitara, thanks for your well thought comment. Highly appreciate.

Mitara N from South Africa on April 09, 2020:

Lovely piece Umesh,

Though there are options of having bread buttered on both sides.

I would choose love, tried and trusted

Thank you for sharing

Manatita44, you are becoming kinder and kinder. Hats off to you.

Haha.

I have dedicated my last Hub to you, Bro. Have a look!

Manatita44, thanks for your extended thoughts. You are always amazing.

manatita44 from london on April 07, 2020:

Emge you are right at one level, but seen with the eye of Oneness, there's only Brahman (God). Haven't you yourself, said that God is the only Doer. Believe in this.

Bhattuc knows this difference like most of us, again, it is God who carries us in the lust as well as the divine love. Praise be!

Manatita44, you always light the lamp for us. Your awareness of other cultures is really something to strive upon. I am happy as well as impressed. Long live your creative energy. All the best.

MG Singh emge from Singapore on April 07, 2020:

Nice write-up on love and lust. But there is a subtle difference. You can lust for a woman but you cannot lust for god. You can only love him. Nice poetry.

manatita44 from london on April 07, 2020:

Thank you for your belief in me, my Bhaia Ji.

You are seeing my writings, from the Light of your own inner beauty. One day, like Sri Krishna ... like the Christ and more, we will both hear the melody of the inner music ... sing constantly, like the nightingale. Jai Ram!

Rosina, Peggy, Lorna, Manatita44, RoadMonkey, Nell, Ruby Jean and Brenda, my gratitude to all. I am overhelmed with so many quick responses. I know it was written so simply without the jargon that poems generally have still so much affinity is bestowed by all of you that I feel contented in my attempt. Thanks for your loving comments.

Manatita44 in his own dignified way has tried to tell us the anatomy of love and desire in a detailed way and my special thanks to him for sparing his time and making us more aware and awakened. God bless you my brother.

BRENDA ARLEDGE from Washington Court House on April 06, 2020:

Umesh,

It looks like you opened up a can of worms with this one.

Love or Lust. Let's just say love seems much better if you lust after the one you love.

I shared this one for you here

Ruby Jean Richert from Southern Illinois on April 06, 2020:

I think love and lust go together, but if it's just lust you will soon know. Intriguing topic.

Nell Rose from England on April 06, 2020:

Love and lust are different, but both are needed in a relationship. Sometimes you can love someone, but don't desire them. Then its not going to go anywhere. Interesting stuff.

RoadMonkey on April 06, 2020:

In a marriage relationship, both are necessary components. For the love of a parent for a child, then only love is appropriate.

manatita44 from london on April 06, 2020:

True. Noble attempt. Spiritual Masters sometimes discuss human and divine love. Yet if one looks at it with the eye a Yogi, then both are necessary.

Desire is essential, to take us from the animal world to the plenitude of the life divine. In other words, it is fundamentally a significant part of growth. We are evolving all the time. The soul itself is in the process of evolution.

From the Highest standpoint, Love is the unseen force, the driver in ALL things, nudging and pushing us, until we find our way Home. Now do I mean that we should be like mad dogs? No! But an act can be repeated for many years, even lifetimes, before the lesson is learnt.

It is Love in the addict and the prostitute as well as the tramp; it is the same Love in the lust of human endeavours, only in a much grosser form

Lorna Lamon on April 06, 2020:

I think lust is purely physical and love is something much deeper and takes longer to cultivate, like a rare orchid or rose. I am sure each of us will see love in a different light, however, with maturity comes understanding. I enjoyed this thought provoking poem Umesh.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 06, 2020:

There are all kinds of love. The love of nature or the sweet face of a newborn baby is one kind of love. When it comes to dating and getting to know a person, true love takes time to grow. I think that is the main difference between love or the more instant feeling of lust. It takes maturity to know the difference as the words of your poem illustrates.

Rosina S Khan on April 06, 2020:

Umesh, this is an interesting hub in which you attempt to differentiate between love and lust. I think they are interwoven. Thanks for sharing.
