Val is a life-long practically oriented student of effective emotional and attitudinal responses to the many challenges of life.

It was long ago while I was still a teen

when the Beatles came up with song

"We All Live in a Yellow Submarine"

lyrics little understood but strong.

I used to hum the catchy tune

a teenager happy, careless and free

on top of the world like imaginary tycoon

not even thinking what some day I wanted to be.

Many years passed until that day

when the lyrics got a meaning to me

some deep truth they wanted to convey

about human nature that not many can see.

Yes, in a yellow submarine we all live

submerged in our subconscious bubble

too far from conscious that we could forgive

and that represents our human biggest trouble.

We can't see beyond that enclosed space

far down from sun of the enlightened sky

switched on automatic, most of our race

from our day of birth, till the day we die.

How little would it really take to emerge

out of the depth that's so murky and afar

perhaps at least to be floating on the verge

of two worlds -- wet, but knowing that we are.

John ---The Beatles were a sort of "musical mentors" in the hippy movement, known for its sharp disagreement with the Establishment. They spent quite some time in India, learning the so called Transcendental Meditation from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (I used to practice it with my Hatha yoga as a teenager, it's the one with a repeated mantra)..-- The whole experience was very liberating for them, inspiring for many songs, like "All You Need Is Love", and alike.

But at that time I couldn't care less about what they meant by "yellow submarine".

Even now I am not sure if that's what they meant, but understanding now what was their message to the mankind, I figure that could be it. Namely, "enlightenment after a blind brainwashing by Establishment" was the big theme in Indian philosophy.

I was a young child at the time but I remember the song and it was very catchy. I never tried to find a meaning in it. Maybe you have found it though. Good Poem.

Peggy -- Since you can remember the song, you are at the age -- like myself -- when people are searching for the meanings. I'm glad you liked the poem. Have a great day.

Like you, I was also a teen when that Beatles' song became popular. Your poem regarding the meaning of the song makes one think. Good job!
