Let Me Walk

“Let me walk,”
I demanded
Each and every day.
And each and every day,
My mom said no.
She said,
“No, no, no, no, no!
People like us,
People who look like us,
We aren’t allowed to walk.
They won’t let us.”
“Walk straight,”
My friend demanded
Each and every day.
And each and every day,
I said no.
I said,
“My friend, my friend, my friend, my friend, my friend!
People like us,
People who look like us,
Should be able to walk how we like.
Even though they won’t let us.”
“Stop skipping,”
She demanded
Only once.
For only those
That looked like
Her
Could skip.
I said
Nothing,
For I just skipped away
To wherever I wanted to go
