Laughing at Ourselves for Health: A Poem

Val enjoys writing rhymed poetry with a valuable message in it.

Creators of those laughing statues must have had a giant sense of humor and a good health to go with it.

Nothing kills ego like playfulness, like laughter. When you start taking life as fun, the ego has to die, it cannot exist anymore.

-- Osho

Something in myself liked Groucho Marx

and I like his newer version, Don Rickles

their routine being full of stinging sparks

turning some sweet lollipops into pickles.

A part time student of Zen-like teaching

I laugh at ego, most loudly at my own

mocking political and other preaching

not being anyone's intellectual clone.

Can't count much on reader's trust

that they will not take it as an offence

those expressions of pure satirical lust

but appealing to their laugh-loving sense.

I'm aware, while writing many a satire

I often make some unwelcome intrusions

hoping that some of it might merely inspire

for good laughing at the reader's own illusions.

There is nothing like malicious and mean

in turning something serious into a joke

it's only humor, provocative but clean

no matter what feeling it may evoke.

So, let's learn to laugh at our pretending

at our many masks and all that we're not

that's but the only message I am sending

to folks who never learned to laugh a lot.
