Just A Seagull

Maya Ellenson is keen on creating unconventional poetry and prose, inspired by what the moment reveals.

A Bird Or a Symbol?

With my feet in the ocean

I am watching a seagull soaring above

the vertical waves

surging like liquid towers

collapsing

to billow again

Anton Chekhov's Seagull blending

with Richard Bach's Jonathan Livingston namesake

yet I try to observe just a seagull

not a metaphor

or a symbol

to define a book

a stage

a movie

celebrated and still trapped

in the pages one peruses over and over

the brown-mottled seagull is gliding in gusty wind

piercing the thunderous sky

reverberating its fascinating madness across the beach

dropping all reference points

texts

allusions

I try to discern just a bird

and the elements

in their purity

undiluted by mental imprints

for a moment it even felt

I turned into the gull myself

until I found a cloud

patterned like Tiwaz

a rune of will and action

everything does always evoke something else

it is not

or it appears to be--

the mind's strange way

of grasping meanings of things

always reflected

and echoed --

never the original

It is fun watching seagulls soaring over salty waters skimming the airwaves. Your poem captures that and more.
