It Started With A Borrowed Book...

Emee.chan once received a beautiful note and returned it because she was oblivious on purpose.

A Note That (Should've) Changed Everything

That note is like a mark,
A brand on my memory.
Even now I wonder
What it was all supposed to mean.

The night before that fateful day
I asked you a question.
As it usually went,
A straight answer I didn't get.

Little did I know that
I would be caught by surprise,
A little "slip" up of yours
Should've opened my eyes.

And it did shock me,
That much I'll admit.
But did it open my eyes?
Highly unlikely.

As you gave me the book,
You drew my attention
To a little piece of paper,
Saying "Make sure not to lose it."

Oh you needn't worry,
I didn't lose it.
The only regret I have is
That I didn't keep it.

Of course, curious as I was,
I read it when I got home.
What it said there left me
In a daze.

It was a quote from the book
About a dog and his owner,
Explaining how we share
The fate of those we love.

I recall sitting in silence
For a few minutes.
My eyes never straying
From the note in my hands.

Your handwriting was elegant,
Unlike my chicken scrawl.
The words looked painted carefully,
With light strokes.

Was I really that oblivious
Or was it easier for me to pretend
I didn't understand
What you tried to say?

I guess it was easier for me
To act like I didn't realise
The meaning behind
Those few lines.

Of course, as it usually went
With the 19-year old me,
The only comment you got in return
Was about your beautiful handwriting.

And it was beautiful,
So much so that I still
Mourn my stupidity demonstrated by
Not keeping the note.

As much as I feel bitter
About the events after
That fateful January day,
I wished I kept that little piece of you
Tucked in some secret place.

I should've put it somewhere safe, instead of returning it.
