Ireland, My Home

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

ireland-my-home

This ancient land of music and verse

Where ruins abide in half-remembered

Days of battles fought on windswept shores

And the breath of Oscar Wilde permeates the air

Within each Irish home glows the fire

Of welcome where friends and family

Gather as the legends of generations

Fall softly like mist turning to rain

Childhood memories of ethereal worlds

Are carried across the sea on the spirit

Of waves and gently brought ashore

Where the joy of tradition still resides

As the lilt of Irish laughter is embraced

Within this land of forty shades of green

Amongst the warmth of friendship

In the knowledge of acceptance and love

Where prayers are said in ancient abbeys

And dreams conspire with the sun to create

A waterfall of remembering and hope

Leaving its mark on this island where I belong

Thank you for the lovely comments Diana. There is a real sense of community in Ireland which I believe accounts for the warmth and hospitality of the Irish. I appreciate your visit and glad you enjoyed this poem.

Umesh Chandra Bhatt from Kharghar, Navi Mumbai, India on August 29, 2020:

I had only once visited London sometime in 2009-2010, not remembering the exact date, when people suggested me to go to Ireland to view the beauty of nature and for its enchanting village sites. I somehow missed the opportunity but your poem has helped me to visit there virtually through your expressions and emotions which you have crafted in this particular poem. At this age for me it is not feasible to visit far off places and the only recourse is through the writings of the people like you. Thanks for the nice composition about your home place. God bless you.

manatita44 from london on December 02, 2019:

So beautiful! I did ask you where you came from without a response. I thought you might be English and well travelled. Did not think Ireland.

Your poetry, interestingly enough, reminds me of me. Perhaps I used to use that style once. Clear, pragmatic, lucid and succinct. Painting pictures in a very communicable way without the mystic, yet filled with mystery.

That scenery is breathtaking! Lovely piece!
