Indelible Images

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

indelible-images

The familiar tilt of your head

As you tried to tame the wildness

Of the rose bushes

Like recalcitrant children

They tested your patience

Yet you loved the beauty of their petals

And understood their hidden thorns

The myriad depths of imperfection

You feathered with your kindness

A haunting tune you teased from the piano

Where I picked up the fallen notes

And danced to the rhythm of our understanding

Long ago scratches on the old kitchen table

Playing host to forgotten conversations

Your armchair lounges beside the hearth

A pattern once bold has faded, content to rest

Shadows play at the windows

Waiting to empty the room

Of all my unfinished sentences

Memories rise from the pile on the rug

Where I left them

They fall around me and I capture them

I breathe deeply

To take in all that you meant to me

Understanding in that moment

The strength of an unbroken love

That is a lovely thought Peggy and one which will bring you comfort. I lost both my parent's when they were quite young and even though time does heal, I miss them every day. However, there are so many fond memories which I can recall and these keep them close in my heart.

My mum has always been my inspiration Peggy. The only way I could express this heartbreaking loss was in writing this poem, although I will always miss her. Thank you for your very kind comments.

And understood their hidden thorns."

We see and feel the beauty, while appreciating that a little prick of pain might be included. I love the strength of love in both stanzas.

Madam, I am a newbie here. So I have some difficulty to grasp this fully. From what I understood, you meant like love should be more to do with inside or imperfections than outside beauty :)

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on May 29, 2019:

What beautiful poetry about undying love, Lorna. this was a delight to read. In fact, I was trimming a climbing rose today and was pricked quite extensively by the sharp thorns. Thank you for sharing.
