I Cannot Fly

Lorna is a published writer with a particular interest in narrative poetry, which she finds therapeutic.

i-cannot-fly

Sometimes we look for reasons

Because we don’t want to try

Sometimes we fail to be honest

Because it’s easier to lie

Sometimes we forget to be kind

Because our anger makes us blind

Sometimes we let opportunity pass

Because we know it just won’t last

Sometimes we yearn for better things

Because we can’t fly with broken wings

Questions & Answers

Question: The last part of the poem got me thinking, we yearn for better things because we can't fly with broken wings. Am still trying to get it?

Answer: The last line ties the poem together and means that for those of us who are suffering there is a yearning within us to fly away from the pain, however, they can't because they are broken.

I wrote this poem to describe mental illness and how it must feel Peggy. As a child I also used to dream of flying, usually from the top of a mountain. Thank you for visiting and I appreciate your comments. Take care.

Peggy Woods from Houston, Texas on April 09, 2020:

When I spotted the title of this poem, it reminded me of the many dreams I used to have of flying. They were wonderful! I have not had that type of dream now for many years. Your meaning of this poem, of course, is very different. Being broken in body, mind, or spirit does limit a person. Healing needs to take place.

Lorna, I feel you wrote this poem for me at this exact moment as I’m going through an internal conflict with a loved one. Your poem conveyed everything I’m feeling and I just didn’t wanna admit to my self. I imagine you are going through something similar your self that incited you to write this poem. I hope you come to a resolution, I will try as well. Thank you!
