How Does One Sleep at Night Knowing...?

How does one sleep at night when his wife is laying next to him weeping,

How does one sleep at night while knowing her children are hungry,

How does one sleep at night when she knows that she accused her father of abuse,

How does one sleep at night while knowing that your children do not appreciate you.

So many times we go on with our lives without regret,

We opt to give up easily when people depend on us,

We accuse people intentionally just because they do not do what we asked them to do for us,

We tend to believe that hurting people intentionally will make them strong,

We put people lives at risk just to save ours,

We fight people over a spoon when they are in several battles with Lions,

We manipulate good people forgetting that they might never heal,

We talk and judge the lives of others when we have forgotten about our own.

Dear world, why is life this way?

How does one sleep peacefully at night while they have hurt an innocent soul?

Are they maybe not aware of their actions?

Are they mentally ill or is it what brings them "happiness"?

Ms Lorna and Sir John, you too are totally right. I think we need to re-think our every step as it might affect someone negatively. Thank you so very much for your feedback.:-)

Your poem asks some very important questions. It appears that some people are born without a conscience and can go about their lives feeling no sense of guilt for the hurt they bestow on others.

Lorna Lamon on August 05, 2020:

There are definitely certain people in this world who do take pleasure in the suffering of others. There are also those who never take responsibility for their own actions and tend to blame others. Your poem is full of honesty and I believe that those who can sleep knowing others are suffering due to their actions, obviously do not have a conscience. Great writing.
