Hear the Night

A new day is dawning.

Sunbeams interrupt my sleep, my dreams.

I don’t welcome the sun …

There is something special about the night

I’m a nocturnal being …

by choice.

The night embraces me -

like a long lost friend

catching up after so long apart …

Or like a lover’s caress-

long and slow ...

arousing … awakening desires.

A sense of peace and tranquility

washes over me.

I feel free …alive…

The whole world seems more beautiful

and time stands still

when the lights are dim and distractions few.

The silence …

just me alone with the night …

It’s part of me - my soul.

The silence is external …

there is music within.

It soothes and excites.

I can dance to my own tune,

at my own pace and beat …

and the sound is wonderful.

It’s like I can observe the world

… anonymously …

and time moves slow …

All chaos is forgotten,

the traffic and the crowds …

I meditate and smile.

The world is different when it’s mute,

in the silence,

so am I …

The night is me,

and I am the night …

no matter what the time.

Hear my silence echoing …

Hark!

Hear the Night!

Explanation For the Poem

The poem ‘Hear the Night’ is actually the text for the voiceover of an advertisement I was asked to write for the ’Bose’ brand of noise cancelling headphones. The written text won’t appear anywhere else on the Internet but you may be lucky to see the ad at some stage when it is completed.

I would have included the rough cut video of the advertisement here, but I can’t due to privacy regulations. Instead I chose this song “Can You Hear the Night” by The Muttonheads.
