Having a Life: A Poem

Val enjoys writing rhymed poetry with a valuable message in it.

What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden, and it's not. And a lot of the time it's what makes you great.

-- Emma Stone

Having a life, what does it mean to you

mostly doing what you like -- I would say

but maybe not something others would do

so your biggest fun is someone's wasted day.

Talk about fulfillment and success

and there is no formula valid for us all

what I see as goals you couldn't want less

as each of us is following their own inner call.

So quality of life is a very personal thing

a rich man may be poorer than a poor dude

while with a bad voice under a shower to sing

may give more joy than concert performance could.

So what do we use as a reliable measure

thinking how much we are really living

is it how often we feel a pleasure

or it's about our big achieving.

Again, to some excitement may mean a lot

while others derive subtle and quiet joy

from a life that may be dynamic or not

but just worshiping their mental toy.

What's left to be said on this theme

there are no rules that I'm asserting

let everybody follow their own dream

as long as what they do is not hurting.
