Happiness Lies Within

Umesh is a freelance writer contributing his creative writings on varied subjects in various sites and portals in the internet.

This poem is the result of my response to the word challenge (Week 54 word challenge on the topic 'happy') given by our fellow hubber Brenda Arledge. Almost every week she proposes a word like that to provoke our creative faculties to churn out a piece of writing - anything in form of a story or poem or article.

Happiness is an eluding entity for most of us and generally we go on pursuing it relentlessly and searching it in wrong places. It is the irony of our lives that most of the times we fail in achieving it. Happiness is a continuous requirement in our lives but most of us do not know how to get it. Some of us try to achieve it through materialistic resources but that also doesn't help much. Some try it by minimising their needs but it also works partially. In fact we all are searching as where the happiness actually lies.

In the Indian mythology there has been a great emphasis on lifestyle and following a particular way of life for reducing the worldly desires and temptations and many people believe in that doctrine of achieving spiritual attainments which finally bring happiness in ones life. One has to adopt that technique and find out whether that methodology is successful in bringing happiness in our lives. Likewise, there are different methods mentioned in different cultures for attaining calm and composed life but one has to learn it by trial and error only.

In this poem, I have tried to depict the dwelling place of happiness which is not outside but is somewhere in our hearts only. What is required is that we have to introspect ourselves and find it lying there. If we stop worrying for all the unnecessary things in our lives then it would be possible to look within and find the real solace and calm which only brings happiness in a person. Incidentally in this particular poem I have also tried to make the poetic rhythm just by using three words in each line no more no less.

Happiness lies within

Searching for happiness,

In material things.

Yearning for success,

In worldly strings.

That unending struggle,

Keeping the pace.

Day and night,

That hollow race.

Happiness eluded me,

Hide and seek.

I simply became,

Mad and freak.

I went ahead,

I came back.

I scouted everywhere,

I was sad.

The agony within,

Like an evil.

I found myself,

Caught by devil.

Then it stroked,

Like a flash.

I stopped worrying,

Pain was less.

I peeped within,

It was blinking.

In my heart,

Happiness was singing.
