Full of Talent and True Grit: The Rise of the Queen of Soul

Heather has a Bachelor's Degree in English from Moravian College and has been freelance writing for more than 12 years.

A talented singer who could literally school anyone

With talent to be a proper diva onstage and off

Not the type to make the tabloid pages

Someone that could not be outshined on the stage

Her home away from home of sorts

Always had the drive to succeed no matter what

Aretha Franklin became the "Queen of Soul" for good reason

Had a voice and a drive like no one else

Determined to make a name for herself at a very young age

Sang in her church choir as her father was the pastor

Went on the road with him in some extreme circumstances

That often happened around her; became part of it a few times

Weathered a few very unexpected arrivals and departures

Lost her mother at a very young age and saw her father differently

Secretly realizing that he wasn't a perfect person

Not openly expressing those thoughts; still considered him important

When it came to advise and council in career matters

Often placed in a box by record executives

Who only believed she could do and be only one thing

Proved them wrong time and time again by pivoting regularly

Sliding into different styles and genres when she felt like it

Never sang a song that she didn't feel connected to

Married twice to very different men

One a violent hustler that overstayed welcome

The other a nice guy who likely didn't have a chance

Due to timing and circumstances beyond both of them

Sometimes her need to succeed caused her to overstep

Landing into the lanes of her sisters' singing careers

Taking opportunities away from them unnecessarily

Hard to say if it was accidental or intentional

Nature of the Music Industry beast sometimes

Survived changing times and different eras

Moved to different record companies after many years

When they no longer seemed to understand her anymore

Lived a long and eventful life that deserved a biopic movie

And a television show about her talented nature

Awaiting the movie and hoped that it lived to its title

Respect.

The Queen of Soul in all her glory.

The Queen of Soul in all her glory.

Aretha Franklin certainly had a long and successful career. I did not know that much about her background. You filled in some of those gaps for me.
