Festive Season-Respect

festive-season-respect

The festive season’s coming

The parties and the fun.

Respect other people’s wishes

drink’s not for everyone.

The reason I’m not drinking

you don’t need to know.

Don’t keep trying to give me alcohol

respect when I say no.

You say “go on just have a drink

lighten up and have some fun”

You don’t know my history

And the damage that I’ve done.

I can enjoy myself like everyone

And dance and laugh and sing.

I just don’t need the alcohol

And the damage it will bring.

festive-season-respect

This is a poem I wrote a few years ago with a bit of Scottish slang

Naw Am Aff It

The clock strikes 12, and the bells still ring

to welcome the New Year.

It won’t be long until I hear

the words that I most fear.

Gawn hiv a drink

I’ll answer

Naw am aff it.

My first foot’s knocking at the door

a bottle in his hand.

I know he’s going to say the words

I wish I could get banned.

Gawn hiv a drink

I’ll answer

Naw am aff it

This year I’ll keep some friends around,

ones that know the score.

And when that fateful question comes

it won’t be like before.

Gawn hiv a drink

I’ll answer.

Naw am aff it

I have to keep more focused

at the party time of year.

So when the questions put to me

my answer is quite clear.

Gawn hiv a drink

I’ll answer

Naw am aff it

Now New Year’s Day is over,

it’s back to like before.

I,ll keep the same clear answer

for the other three six four.

Gawn hiv a drink

I’ll answer.

Naw am aff it

A merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to everyone who reads this.

And to anyone in recovery the answer is Naw am aff it.

Thank you Lorna. Yes some people don't understand you can enjoy yourself without alcohol, and for many years I was one of them

Lorna Lamon on December 03, 2019:

I love your poems Charlie and as someone who does not drink because of an allergy, I certainly enjoy the festive season without it, at least I can remember it. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and a peaceful and Happy New Year.

John Hansen from Queensland Australia on December 03, 2019:

Charlie, I love how you are openly discussing your demons. That is the best way to defeat them. Have a wonderful alcohol free Christmas...there is still a lot to enjoy without the need for it. Nice poetry.
