Fearless Warriors

Fearless Warriors

I smile at the patients wheeling in,
Ignoring the mask cutting my skin.
I brush aside my own headache,
To tend to the countless lives at stake.

My people's applause resounds in my ears,
My hard work appeasing their fears.
Home sweet home is a distant memory,
Thoughts of my family comforting me.

During those long, painful nights,
I brace myself to fight.
In this isolation ward,
I am a soldier without a sword.

Let us all take a minute to acknowledge and appreciate the commendable efforts of our doctors and nurses during these troubled times.

Kathy, I should be thanking your family for being such an integral part of the coronavirus pandemic. I can't even imagine how hard it must be for you! Take heart and don't lose faith. It will all be over soon, and I will be right here, praying for you and your lovely family :)

Thank you for this beautiful poem.

My sweet hubby has been on the front line since the beginning. He is one of the selfless warriors among many of his colleagues. The days are long, and they are weary. Their poor faces and lips chapped and cracking from the PPE.

My sister and her hubby are Physicians. My Daughter and her Aunt, (my little sister) are school nurses. My husband's sister also a nurse. My sweet niece, a recent graduate nurse, jumped right into service immediately after her celebration of passing her boards. They and thousands upon thousands more who walk into this burning fire each day, ready and willing to soldier through this pandemic.

They hold the hands of both the patients and their families. They pump up the energy in their tired voices to share updates over the phone with patients' loved ones. They duck into a closed room just long enough to remove the PPE and take a deep breath, only to place it back quickly resuming the tasks at hand.

They feel the pain of separation from their own and for those they serve. Their compassion and dedication are worthy of a hero's cape, and yet they quietly fly under the radar. So again, thank you for this poem.

A wonderful ode to those very deserving "front line" COVID fighters.
