Embrace the Reflection

Poetry is turning out to be a very cathartic medium, I should do this more often.

We don't always enjoy the reflection staring back at us in the mirror, but we can learn to.

We don't always enjoy the reflection staring back at us in the mirror, but we can learn to.

I stared deep into the mirror of my choosing,

The reflection stared back with cruelty unmatched.

"Why do you do this to me?" I asked in fear,

He had no response but a finger pointed back.

I reached out in earnest to touch his shoulder,

My reflection recoiled and shuddered so true.

"You've been running away for so very long,

Let me caress all of your pain away."

So I began to thrash beneath my own touch,

Screaming and clawing to run away once more.

Calling out in empathy, "Let's run together!"

And so we did side by side.

Step by step and breath by breath,

We matched each other as perfect equals.

"You are my reflection just as I am yours,

See now that we can be functional as a whole."

So my reflection and I stopped in a field,

A field that's fruitful with our emotions.

We embraced beneath the stalks of our sadness,

And now my reflection and I are one.

Don't Let Yourself Go

I'm coming to learn just how important it is to pay attention to yourself, your mental health, and how you let those around you treat you. You can't keep running from the reflection in the mirror and hoping that avoidance will bring you to some profound understanding. Repression, fear, and introspective violence are not healthy coping mechanisms by any means.

Currently I find myself facing that reflection I've been running away from, and boy are we looking rough. I'll press onward through the battlefield, though, and my reflection will once again look like the conqueror he is.
