Don't Tell Me

Updated on April 5, 2018

Don't tell me how to life my life
I've been here fairly long enough
To know for myself
To love for myself
To suffer and struggle
To fall and pick myself up again
To know right from wrong
But most importantly
To know that I don't need you.

I like your poem, Halyna. How can we possibly ever know what another person has experienced in his or her life? So how can we be so naive to judge them or give them advice? Everyone must come to their own conclusions in the end about what is good for them and we need to give them the freedom to make their own decisions. Friendship is not about imposing our views and lifestyles on others but respecting the choices of others. If we love or care about another, either in a romantic sense or as a friend, we should support that person not try to control them and force our views on them. Love is all about respecting another’s freedom and giving them the support and confidence that they need to achieve their dreams and a life that leads to their happiness. Thanks for sharing your insightful poem!
