Voice of the Abyss

Just one more little,

Lonely thought,

Fluttering through my mind.

Calling out

From the abyss;

Shattering the silent night.

"Look! Come see,

What you have done!"

Echoing all around.

So many scenes

Of days long past,

Lie scattered upon the ground.

Of ecstasy and anguish,

And despair.

The only treasures that I own;

Cast aside,

Without a care.

And when the echoing

Finally died;

I gathered all these things.

For in my hands lie

All the beauty

That living truly brings.

Carpe Diem

I awoke again, today,

To another new beginning.

A fresh, great adventure;

Another day to seize!

Another troublesome bother;

Yet another moment passed.

I stubbed my toe, in the hall,

That's the third time this week!

Another bloody row,

With the face behind the glass.

Another bitter coffee,

I spilled a little, on the floor.

Another mad-dash, white knuckle ride;

Again the punching of the clock.

Another dull chat with Jim, in accounting,

Sipping warm water from a white paper cup.

Yet another mid-morning meeting,

What the hell is mid-morning, anyway?

One more sandwich, from the pail;

The bread, again, has gone stale.

As the afternoon wears on,

I can't wait to make it home.

Just one more e-mail, one more reply,

Then, to adventure, I will surely fly!

One more red light,

I swear it's never green.

Another take-out dinner,

Supped in silence, once again.

By now, I should be sleeping,

Another restless night.

Another dream of loves come and gone,

Never forgotten.

One more call of the alarm,

Another new beginning.

A fresh, great adventure.

Another day to seize.

Just one more verse,

Superfluous and enigmatic,

Posted on my wall.

I'd yell out, to the void,

But someone might call back,

"What the fuck do you want?!"

I would have no answer.

Except, if I must,

"Slag off, ruddy bastard!"

You can't give it,

So why ask?

I'll tell you what I want.

Carefree days at 16.

Intense desire and heartbreak.

The first, and only true love.

Mind-altering, reality shattering,

Skinned-knee, hungering

These three pieces are kind of raw. They were written stream-of-thought, with very little editing. While they aren't technically the best, they are exactly how I felt when writing them. At the end of the day, that's what art is about, right? Conveying a feeling to an audience.

When you can tap into your innermost soul and, without even really thinking, produce a coherent work; to me, that is the truest form of poetry. Freeverse, as an artwork, is often looked down on by people who are far more educated than myself. However, the raw quality of freeverse is what makes it beautiful, in my eyes.
