Caregiver Chronicles: Mom's Health Crisis

Jo Anne became a caregiver to her mom in 2014. She is also a publisher, coach, author, and member of the National Writers Union NY Chapter.

Grieving losses all around,
striving to lift my spirits
from being down.

Too many respiratory illnesses,
leading to death.
Then mom takes sick
before I could catch my breath.

Not enough rest,
awakened from my sleep.
The home health aide called me
to check out mom’s rectal bleed.

An ambulance ride to the hospital,
didn’t know what to expect.
Told that due to COVID restrictions,
still no visitors yet.

CT Scans, transfusions,
a bedside colonoscopy,
But still no definitive
place of the active bleed.

The blood thinner meds
are the cause.
They’re trying to reverse the effects
while putting those meds on pause.

My sister and I
have been
all the way stressed.
But we’re trusting that God
has mom covered and kept.

I heard her voice on a call,
and they FaceTimed me
when she was asleep.
Both of those instances
gave my mind sweet peace.

No more transfusions,
active bleed seems done.
No blood in her last stool,
a victory has been won.

God is answering prayer,
His will is my surrendered prayer,
although my flesh wants mom
back home with me here.

She’s a bed-bound patient
with communication issues.
Short-term memory loss
and expressive aphasia too.

It’s my heartfelt desire
to have this health crisis end,
In the name of Jesus,
my Lord, Savior, and friend.

Amen, and so it is!

"Beloved, I pray that in every way you may succeed and prosper and be in good health [physically], just as [I know] your soul prospers [spiritually]." - 3 John 2, AMP
