Attempting to break away from the bonds of past shaky alliances

Partnerships based on lies and half truths laced with false promises

One half of the pairing always fading into the background

Allowing the more boisterous of the two to shine through

Earning all of the laughs at social and professional gatherings

Tired of being the benevolent side of the coin and getting little back

Stressing out over whether someone else's needs are met

While yours seem to matter less and less as time marched on

Sure, there were some fun times that were had for the duo

Great music was created and fond memories made in process

Time to spread those pinned back wings once and for all

Figured it was better to go it alone than as part of a failing duo

Awards worthy praise came and went faster than singles

That failed to chart at all; despite repeated efforts to do so

Anger and shattered glass became the new musical beat

Interlaced on every track and made it harder to create

Toxicity destroyed last ounce of creativity and harmony

Left with a break-up of the verbal and legal persuasion

Frightened of being forced to being in the spotlight

Without anyone to cover any slip-ups or cushion the blow

Almost tricked into becoming some power player's sidepiece

Starting to become dissatisfied with members of opposite sex

Who want this unrealistic form of perfection to play with

Something unattainable that will only lead to disappointment

Rita Hayworth never had men falling for her off-screen

They wanted to sleep next to Gilda and ended up with her instead

Wondered if it would always be better to be alone and yourself

Instead of part of a fictitious pairing only doomed for failure

Hard to say what was scarier: playing pretend or being honest alone

Determined to live by my own private truth and integrity

No need to water down a strong foundation in order to be loved

Wouldn't have been the real deal in the first place

Terrified of taking the next valuable step alone

Thought it would be best to do this in baby steps

Find the right material to carve a true identity on

Reveal it to the world on your terms only

If the world loves it, enjoy in your newfound glory

If they don't, move on to something new and don't worry about it

Just keeping living as yourself and the rest will follow.

Striking out on your own can be scary and rewarding at the same time.
